The town of Colmenar marks the western point of Axarquia on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Located 35km from the Mediterranean coast, Colmenar is an excellent starting point for tours of the scenic ‘Olive Oil’ route into the Sierra de Camaroles and the Miraflores Mountains. Colmenar is the ‘capital of the Malaga Mountains’, providing the outlying villages with an accessible commercial centre. Things to do in Colmenar, Spain

When you first arrive at a self catering Colmenar holiday rental, a great option is to walk up to the village’s highest point, marked by the Convent of the Virgin of La Candelaria. The views from the convent are absolutely stunning, with the snow capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada providing a picturesque backdrop. The Church of Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion is also worth investigating from a Colmenar property, built in the 16th century.

The rural location of Colmenar makes it an ideal base for hiking holidays and mountain biking breaks. The town enjoys unrivalled access to the mountains of Malaga, and the olive grove carpeted plains that stretch out in front of the town.

Colmenar is known for its gastronomy, with many little family run restaurants serving local dishes, washed down with the finest local wines. The bean omelette (tortilla de habas) and garbanzos soups are particularly good local dishes, particularly in the winter when the weather has cooled off a little. Despite the fact that much of the calendar is affected by harvest and mules are still a common form of transport in Colmenar, the town can come to life during the evenings as there are some wonderful bars, which welcome visitors with open arms.

Colmenar hosts a great selection of festivals and fiestas during the year, which visitors are fully encouraged to join in with. The Dia de la Pipa on the 3rd of May is a wonderful time to be staying in Colmenar accommodation as the whole town heads into the countryside for a huge picnic. The Colmenar Fair in August and the Easter Holy Week are two of the most exciting times to be in a Colmenar property, with endless music, dancing and feasting occurring throughout the town.

Fabulous Villa in Stunning Location

This is a lovely villa in which to spend a holiday. It has the most amazing views. We had unseasonably cold and windy weather for the week we were there (early April) so unfortunately we weren’t able to make the most of the beautiful swimming pool and outside area as it was too cold. The hot tub saved the day for us all and we enjoyed it very much. Sitting in the hot tub, looking out across the lake and to the snow covered mountains was a truly amazing and memorable experience. The villa is up in the mountains and it is a short drive to village shops and facilities. The coast towns such as Nerja are easily accessible and the roads are good. We had some difficulty with the hot water supply whilst there but this was dealt with appropriately by Dennis and Karen. We are happy to recommend this villa.

A great villa tucked away in the Andalucian hills. We were there in March / April so was a bit chilly in the evenings. Heaters were provided and plenty of wood for the open fire. Daytimes were warmer and we even braved a dip in the pool. Comares is only a short (if steep) walk away, with a couple of reasonable restaurants. There's a small supermarket in the town. You're not going to come here for the action, this is a place to really unwind, relax and chill out. There's wifi to get connected when you are not enjoying the peace, tranquillity and views over the hills. Malaga is an hour away; trips to Ronda and Granada are easy (although beware attempting to take the "scenic" routes following google maps, very scenic but we found ourselves on tracks that were little more than crumbling paths cut into the hillsides...) The villa is well equipped (there are mugs, and too many egg cups!), it is clean and spacious. The road down to it is a steep track, but ignore the comment from the previous grumpy reviewer who complained it's like a Land Rover course, we were in a small hatchback and it was no trouble.
