Make a holiday villa in Castell-Platja d’Aro your home away from home

Castell-Platja d’Aro villas are in a lovely coastal town with fabulous sandy beaches, backed by steep wooded hills. This destination suits holidaymakers who value privacy, but still want access to all the fun and activities of a Mediterranean resort. Holiday homes in Castell-Platja d’Aro provide comforts like private pools and gardens, as well as thoughtful domestic facilities like Internet access, satellite TV and fully appointed kitchens. The gorgeous medieval city of Girona is 30 minutes away by car, and there are a wealth of opportunities for hiking, watersports, golf and much more close to villas in Castell-Platja d’Aro.

Things to do

-Beaches: The local coastline offers eight different beaches, varying in size and character. Best for families is La Platja Gran, a long, inviting arc of golden sand with superb access to the town’s amenities. A little less frequented are coves and hidden bays like Sa Conca and Sa Cova, which bookend La Platja Gran and boast transparent waters and sparser development.

-Outdoor fun: The town’s hinterland is rugged, wild and offers wonderful terrain for hikers and mountain bikers. There are caves, pine forests, peaks, romanesque churches and sweeping vineyards to admire. Many visitors make for the lookout at Roca Martina for exceptional views of the Mediterranean. Golfers have five courses within a half-hour drive, the closest being Masnou Platja d’Aro, featuring 18 holes and a pitch and putt course.

-Heritage: Benedormiens castle can be found close by and is open to visitors—it dates to the 11th century and has witnessed plenty of upheaval over the years, now serving as a local cultural centre. Just outside the town is Mas Daussá, a spectacular farmhouse that dates to the 1500s, while in Castell-Platja d’Aro there’s an interesting Doll Museum with a collection numbering several hundred and spanning a number of centuries.

-Gastronomy: Empordà has a great reputation for its cuisine, which takes advantage of a location sandwiched between the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, blending coastal refinement with rustic heartiness. Fish and seafood are important here, with eel, mussels, sea urchins, cuttlefish and anchovies central to many traditional soups and stews. Empordà is also an historic wine-growing region, with a variety of reds, whites and rosés under the local designation of origin label.

-Excursions: The city of Girona is well worth the simple drive north thanks to its spellbinding historical wealth and unique character. It sits on the Onyar River and has kept its original medieval street plan and much of its architecture. You can walk a section of the old defensive walls, visit a preserved Jewish quarter, cross the Onyar to see the city’s beautiful riverside houses and enjoy Girona’s religious heritage at the intact Cathedral and collegiate church of Sant Feliu.

A lovely cottage in a village setting.

5 of 5
We had a really enjoyable week in this lovely cottage, which was very comfortable and extremely well equipped. The beach and marina at Platja D'Aro were within easy reach, both by car, and by bike (using the cycle paths). A short walk from the main beach were smaller bays and beaches, which were ideal for swimming and snorkeling. We also made a day trip to the lovely city of Girona - compact, really interesting, and with a great selection of restaurants. This cottage, and its location, provided us with the best of everything. Also - great hosts!

Fantastic Villa

4 of 5
The villa was everything we had been promised. Amazing views towards Palamos, a beautiful crystal clear pool, table tennis to keep the older kids amused and a truly comfortable feel to the property that really made it feel like home.
