Make a holiday rental villa or farmhouse in Camaleno, Spain your home away from home

Camaleno is an inland municipality in the Autonomous Community of Cantabria, found on Spain’s Atlantic coast, to the north of the country. It’s a region of considerable natural beauty, boasting mountains, lakes, lush greenery and a long, scenic coastline. There’s also plenty of history here, with quaint medieval towns dotted around, and a number of prehistoric caves open to the public.

Things to do in Camaleno, Spain

At a Camaleno holiday villa you’ll be in the Picos de Europa mountain range, which spans much of northern Spain. A large portion of the range is found within the eponymous national park - is the largest in Europe. With numerous trails to be found close to holiday farmhouses in Camaleno, it’s a real delight for keen walkers or mountain bikers, and the vistas are truly astounding. Towering peaks and gorges characterise the mountain range, while the park supports an array of wildlife, including the endangered Cantabrian brown bear.

It’s ideal if you’d like to escape the bustle of city life, and would also offer the perfect setting to take part in some re-energising adventure sports. The Saja River is within 20 minutes of Camaleno holiday accommodation, and is popular for canoe excursions. The Deva is a little further, but is another hotspot for water-based adventure activities.

The town of Potes is within easy reach of self-catering villas in Camaleno, and is found within the stunning Liebana valley. One of the main landmarks in this historic market town is the Torre del Infantado, a medieval defensive tower.

Places to visit on holiday in Camaleno, Spain

The Cantabrian coast is within an hour’s drive of farmhouse rentals in Camaleno. There’s a wonderful mixture of pristine beaches and spectacular rocky landforms. La Franca, Pechon and San Vicente de la Barquera are great destinations for beach excursions, the latter being an enchanting fishing village that dates to pre-Roman times. At the towns along the coast you’ll be able to enjoy some sublime seafood, while the shoreline is also home to most of Cantabria’s golf courses.

Weather in Camaleno, Spain

Cantabria, like much of northern Spain, is generally known for its mild weather. Summers here tend to be pleasantly warm, while winter are usually cool and wet, with plenty of snowfall in elevated areas. If you’d like to catch the best beach weather, then it’s worth heading for a Camaleno holiday rental in the months of June, July or August.

Cheap flights to Camaleno, Spain

The main international airport for Cantabria is Santander (SDR), which lies some 90 minutes away from holiday villas in Camaleno. There are regular flights between this destination and London-Stansted (STN) via the low-cost airline Ryanair.

Just Right

We spent a wonderful Christmas and New Year at Marta's farm. Thank you for the Christmas tree. It was very interesting to find out about the ecological philosophy on which the farm was based. Everything that was said made so much sense. The animals were in beautiful condition and the local produce, in particular the meat, was delicious. My son-in-law, a chef, was very impressed by the quality. I particularly enjoyed using the fresh vegetables from their kitchen garden which they allowed us to use. The house was very comfortable and provided everything necessary for the stay. It was very clean and well taken care of. It provided a very necessary break for us city folk to unwind and detox. There were some really interesting visits and Marta told us about some speciality restaurants in the region which served up the delicious Asturias products cooked to perfection. We hope to repeat our experience next Christmas season. Thanks to Marta and her lovely family for sharing their lives with us.

Beautiful location

5 of 5
The Casa was lovely and in a beautiful location with fabulous views. A mountain right outside the window! Great walks from the village and within a short drive from the house. There are no shops or bars in the village so we ate in bar/restaurants in local villages which were all excellent, inexpensive hearty food. We loved the Picos mountains and our only disappointment was staying for only 4 nights! You need a week or more to really enjoy the area.

A home... Away from home

A gorgeous place to stay, cosy and comfy, but also a great place to start discovering the "Paraiso Natural". Between forest and mountain, and at the same time close to the beautiful beaches. Thank you Olga and Marc for your hospitality and advices, and congrats for the house ! We'll be back, that's fore sure ;) Jean Marc and Anne-Françoise, from Belgium
