Make a holiday villa in Cala Deya your home away from home

One of the best features of Majorca is its beaches and Cala Deya is right up there with the island’s best places to spend some time at the water’s edge. The rich and famous have caught on and come here or to the nearby village of Deià when they want a quiet, discreet break from the spotlight. With a Cala Deya holiday villa, you too can live like a star who just wants to escape the paparazzi. Most properties have stunning views and private swimming pools and are within walking distance from the beach. All are tastefully decorated so that your Cala Deya holiday accommodation will make you feel as if you’re truly getting the star treatment.

Things to do in Cala Deya

Cala Deya is a tiny beach village set in a sheltered, rocky bay. For many years, it has captured the imagination of writers. Anaïs Nin, for instance, came here on a visit in the 1920s and used the beach as the setting for one of her short stories. Robert Graves and Laura Riding took the advice of Gertrude Stein and settled in the nearby village of Deià, from where they ran their printing press during the 1930s. Gabriel García Marquez and Kingsley Amis were two other writers who visited.

-The beach at Cala Deya is regarded by many as one of the best in Majorca. Secluded and small, this is a great place to get away from it all. It’s a pebble-and-gravel beach with clear, calm water, perfect for swimming. Be sure to climb up to the old fishermen’s boathouses that almost look as if they could have been carved out of the rocks. There aren’t many amenities at Cala Deya but the two beach restaurants serve excellent fish dishes.

-Celebrity spotting is a fun activity while you’re on the beach. Many A-list musicians and Hollywood stars have been known to visit Deià and spend some time at the beach in Cala Deya or let their yachts drop anchor nearby.

-Walking is a popular activity and there are several paths that you can hike in the surrounding countryside with its lovely olive groves. Simply getting to the beach from Deià or from Cala Deya back to its larger neighbour can give your legs quite a workout too, since it’s a very steep path, even if it’s only about a mile long. Of course staying in a holiday villa in Cala Deya means you’re right there at the beach and you don’t have to spend all your energy getting there every day.

- Deià itself is a village well worth exploring. Around since the time or Moorish rule, Deià has a long history with some fascinating museums. One is the Archaeological Museum, but you also cannot miss Ca N’Alluny, the house where Robert Graves lived.

-Deià’s nightlife can be an unforgettable experience. The village has several excellent restaurants catering to the stars and makes for a great night out from your holiday home in Cala Deya. One of the local pubs features regular live music and sometimes you may be lucky enough to witness a jamming session with some very famous musicians indeed.

The weather in Cala Deia

Like the rest of Majorca, Cala Deya experiences a typically Mediterranean climate. Summers are dry and sunny with temperatures reaching into the upper twenties while winters can be rainy, with minimum temperatures of around 4 °C. Winds can be strong and dangerous for anchoring yachts.

Getting to Cala Deya

Part of what keeps Cala Deya secluded is that it’s not very easy to get to. You can drive down a winding lane from Deià but it may be easier to just walk down. The reason for this is that parking at the beach is very limited, so you may want to ensure that your holiday accommodation in Cala Deya has its own parking available. You can reach Deià by bus or take a taxi or rental car from Palma de Majorca. The Majorcan capital has an airport that receives flights from all over Europe and there are ferry links to the Spanish mainland, most notably to Barcelona.

We loved our stay at C'an Llimoner. The villa is beautifully decorated, with large bedrooms and living spaces. The pool is great (it gets quite warm in the afternoon) and the terrace has fantastic views down to the sea. The villa is also in the perfect spot - situated at the end of a lane, there is no through traffic, so peaceful. However, the path to the beach is by the doorstep, whilst the village is only 2 minutes walk away (up a relatively steep hill). Deia is an amazing village, with a couple of superb supermarkets and numerous restaurants. You really can park up the car and spend a week relaxing, without having to drive anywhere. And the quality of the food in a number of restaurants (Sebastian, Sa Vinya, Nama to name a few) is exceptional. This really is a fantastic property in a perfect spot. We've stayed in some top quality Italian villas recently but C'an Llimoner beats them hands down. A truly brilliant holiday destination.

This was our third time on Mallorca and the second time renting on Cala Deia. This was our favorite place. It is extremely private and quiet. Unobstructed views and a gorgeous deck were greatly appreciated. We rode bicycles and hiked and this gem was perfect to come home to after our adventures. It is nicely maintained and has the most well equipped kitchen of any house we have rented all over the world. The pantry was nice too, usually one is required to buy all the basics to cook a simple meal. This was pretty fully stocked. The beds are comfy, we used the AC just in the evenings to lock up and keep the mosquitos outside :) Highly recommend this beautiful place, it was just two of us and we felt it had plenty of room. The washer and dryer work great, so does the dishwasher (a rarity in most smaller European ere is an outdoor bbq but we didn't use it. The restaurant directly down at the cove via a private path is delicious. We ate there many times and mixed it up with a few stay at home easy meals and the rest in Deia, lots of really great places to wine and dine!
