Make a holiday villa in Binissalem your home away from home

Majorcan wine comes highly recommended and the best way to enjoy it is on the island itself. If your perfect holiday includes enjoying a fruity white in the sun or a velvety red with a meal, you might as well go straight to the source. A stay in a Binissalem holiday villa is a must if you’re a wine lover visiting Majorca, since this will place you at the heart of what is probably the island’s most important wine region. Most of the rental properties here come with swimming pools and BBQ facilities, making them perfect for entertaining. Binissalem holiday villas are furnished to ensure that your stay will be unforgettably comfortable and relaxing.

Things to do in Binissalem

Situated on an elevated, hilly plateau in the north-central part of Majorca, Binissalem has been around since Roman times. It was in fact Roman settlers who planted the first vineyards here and produced wines that were even mentioned by Pliny the Elder. While not even Moorish occupation could destroy the area’s wine-making industry, a virus did for a while at the end of the 19th century, prompting farmers to replace the vines with almond trees and other crops. Luckily, today the village and holiday villas in Binissalem are once again surrounded by thriving vineyards.

-Festa des Vermar takes place towards the end of September so if you’re planning on visiting , be sure to book your holiday home in Binissalem well in advance. This nine-day celebration of the grape harvest is one of Majorca’s most popular events, and aside from the many opportunities to taste the local produce, there is plenty of entertainment for all ages. Giant puppets will delight the kids and at night you won’t want to miss the spectacular fire runs. The highlight of the festival is undoubtedly the grape fight. Wear old clothes for this one since you’ll be getting down and dirty.

-Vineyards and bodegas are plentiful around town, so if a wine festival sounds too rowdy for you, you don’t have to despair. There are more tranquil ways to enjoy the fruits of Binissalem’s vines at other times of the year where you can sample the area’s most famous product and stock up on your favourites.

-The Church of Santa Maria of Robines dominates the skyline and is visible from most holiday villas in Binissalem. The first stones were laid during the 15th century but the bell tower dates from 1908. The local parish museum is housed here.

-The town centre is a charming place for a stroll past some magnificent baroque architecture. Many of the older buildings are constructed from Binissalem stone and are local heritage sites.

- Literary fans should note Binissalem was home to two prominent writers and you can still visit the former homes of Llorenç Moyà and LLorenç Villalonga. Moyà’s home now houses Binissalem’s cultural centre while Villalonga’s home is now a museum dedicated to his life and work.

-An ancient Roman road is part of the walking paths around Binissalem which stretch from the town throughout the pretty surrounding countryside winding between the vineyards and olive groves.

The weather in Binissalem

Binissalem has a Mediterranean climate typical of Majorca. However, its higher altitude means that temperatures can be slightly milder here than at the island’s coastal locations. In summer, temperatures can reach around 31 °C while in winter, they drop to about 4 °C. There may be frost in winter and while most rainfall occurs in November, autumn often sees violent storms and you may prefer staying in a cosy Binissalem holiday cottage at this time.

Getting to Binissalem

Binissalem is conveniently located on one of Majorca’s main transport routes and is also served by buses and trains. Only about 13 miles north-east of the island’s capital Palma de Majorca, it’s an easy self-drive or taxi ride from the city’s airport or ferry terminal to your holiday accommodation in Binissalem. Palma can be reached by aeroplane from many European cities or by ferry from Barcelona and other destinations in Spain.

We had a great stay at Els Garroverets. We were group of 6 adults and fro kids (under 6). We enjoyed the rural scenery and beautiful house. It is well taken care of. The pool was great fun and there was lots of yard to run around. The location is perfect. It is close to the Motorway so easy access to the East and West. In Binissalem we did some grocery and bakery shopping other wise we bought food from Al Campo. We will definitely recommend this villa!

A summary of the house based on six week stay

                                                  4 of 5
The description of the house is accurate, (it has plenty of charm, space and comfort). However, some aspects were not as described, e.g. the dishwasher is broken and has not been replaced, the soft furnishings for the garden seating need replacing, the local church bells ring hourly throughout the night, (but can be drowned out if the fan is put on in the bedroom), the electrics can trip out if the kettle and oven are used at the same time, and overall, the property needs some redecorating and minor repairs made. The location is pleasant with restaurants and shops close by, and best of all, the regular, and inexpensive train service to Palma is a short walk from the house. We were pleased with the proximity to varied cycling and walking routes in the mountains, and the fantastic indoor pool at Inca (ten minutes by car). Great for pre-season triathlon training. We would recommend the property to others, because, on the whole, it is good value and pleasant.
