Benaojan is a mountain village in Andalusia with Moorish origins. It has narrow shady streets which all converge on the central plaza and the Church of our Lady of Rosario which has a pretty octagonal belltower. Although the Tajo del Castillejo suggests a castle, there is nothing left of any fortification now.

Things to Do in Benaojan, Andalusia

Sample the local culture in Benaojan by enjoying the chorizo, sausages and ham products which this area is known for. The pigs are reared in the nearby oak forests and processed in the surrounding pueblos (villages). Look out for the local fiestas which are well worth joining in. The Verbena del Tren celebrates the arrival of the railway and is held at the end of July. Partygoers gather at the station and put away 80 kilos of sausages and gallons of sangria. Other festivals are celebrated at Easter (Santa Semana), San Marcos Day in April and the Virgin of Rosario Festival in October. The surrounding area is ideal for scenic hillwalking, mountain biking and nature spotting. The beaches are a 90-minute drive from Benaojan holiday rentals and offer sunbathing, swimming, baoting and a host of watersports on the beautiful Costa del Sol.

Places to Visit Around Benaojan, Andalusia

Ronda is a historic town within easy reach of Benaojan. As well as supplying local groceries and services, Ronda has excellent restaurants, a bullring and the famous El Tajo Gorge which is traversed by three bridges, one dating back to Roman times. The 100-metre drop is always the main attraction as people gather on the bridge and look down to the river far below. The upmarket resort of Marbella is within easy reach from your Benaojan holiday home. There you will find upmarket boutiques, waterfront restaurants, a beautiful promenade and many golf courses. Puerto Banus is even closer to Benaojan and is ideal for shopping and enjoying the marina.

From October to March temperatures range between 17-21°C (63-70°F) although it is cooler in the mountains. During the summer temperatures are 21-30°C (70-86°F) and there is zero rainfall. The maximum rainfall is in the winter, particularly in December, which has around 121mm (5 inches).

We really enjoyed our time at the house. Leo was really helpful about logistics, local sights, supermarkets and all! The location is fantastic - to be so close to glorious Ronda was a real pleasure. We loved the balance of exploring & then quiet time swimming & relaxing. The pool is wonderful with spectacular views out over the countryside. The accommodation is perfect for a couple, or a couple with a baby as Leo set up a great cot. We had a toddler with us & she was very obedient about the stairs fortunately - they are not ideal for a small one. Leo's many dogs are very present, if you don't like dogs then this is not the place for you. In all, a very happy week, thank you Leo.

Quriky house in an excellent location

As you can see from the photos the house is very quirky, with its outcrops of rock, but is pleasant and well-appointed. The view from the terrace, which gets the sun from mid morning onwards, is amazing. The outside space is quite small but fine for two people. The second (small) bedroom is two flights of stairs away from the only bathroom. The kitchen is reasonably well equipped and there are loads of books in the house. The owner sends detailed and helpful instructions - print them out before you come as there are no copies in the house, and some of them are a bit out of date. The bedroom is fine, albeit a little dank on cool days. The cleaner comes at during the day between 11am and 2pm and stays for about 15 minutes. The owner is very helpful and deals with any questions or requests very quickly and efficiently. The location is brilliant - 10 minutes walk from the centre of the village where there are shops, bars, a basic restaurant and a bakery. The final bit of the drive is up a steep,gravel track.
