  • Lovely house with beautiful garden, in tranquil countryside
    5 of 5

Ideal for exploring the spectacular scenery in this region, whether by walking in the mountains or driving round the countryside to visit pretty local towns. The setting is nice and private and allows time for quiet reflection. We were a family group of 12, all ages, renting both the house and the 'cabin'. Both are comfortable and well appointed and all bedrooms in the house bar one have en-suite. We ate outside every day on the large balcony overlooking the fabulous garden. The hydrangeas are gorgeous, and we imagined just how beautiful it would be when the magnolias are in bloom too. The cabin is amazingly spacious, plenty of room for 6 people, with 2 bathrooms, and a pleasant sitting room and kitchen, and its quite private though not far from the main house. It worked well having the cabin for the younger members of the group to have their own space, but we came together for meals and around the pool. San Sebastian itself is lovely, we also liked Hernani very much, there are plenty of little restaurants here serving good, inexpensive local cuisine. We visited Pamplona (fabulous medieval and baroque architecture), Hondarribia (lovely town on the coast), Tolosa (interesting town on the river with unexpected charming squares), Orio (on the pilgrimage route with lovely atmosphere and early medieval architecture), Zarautz (spectacular surf beach), St Jean de Luz (very pretty little seaside town just over the border with great beach and shops). The one thing we'd suggest to improve it would be a tumble dryer for those occasional rainy times! Maria and Isobel were very friendly and helpful, and very apologetic about the unseasonal weather! Being mainly from the UK we were quite used to a few clouds and the odd spot of rain, but were very glad to see the sun when it eventually arrived. Thank you Maria and Isobel for a lovely holiday.
