Make a holiday cottage in Alt Urgell your home away from home

Alt Urgell holiday cottages are set in Catalonia’s Pyrenees, where the landscapes are steep, clad with forest and full of exciting things to see and do. For those itching to get outdoors there’s Nordic skiing in the winter and a range of watersports and adventure on offer in summer. Cottages in Alt Urgell are handsome traditional structures, built with local stone and full of rustic charm, but still cater to the needs of today’s holidaymakers—kitchens and bathrooms are fully appointed, while the latest entertainment facilities and pools are provided by many rentals. Enclosed by large gardens, holiday homes in Alt Urgell are normally very spacious and able to accommodate large families and groups of friends.

Things to do

-Winter activities: In winter the best way to get out and enjoy the scenery is to head for one of the many cross-country ski stations in the region. These include Aransa, Tuixén-la Vansa, Lies de Cerdanya and Sant Joan de l’Erm. They’re made up of large unspoiled spaces criss-crossed by ski trails designed to show off the beauty of the winter landscapes here.

-Summer adventure: When the temperatures rise, Alt Urgell draws thrill seekers of a different kind due to the many rivers in the region. Rafting is even part of the culture—in Coll de Nargó there’s a festival in August recognising the rafters who plied their trade on the risky waters of the Valira River. The place to go for summer fun is Parc del Segre in La Seu d’Urgell, which was built to host watersports for the Barcelona Olympics and now offers hiking, rafting, kayaking and mountain biking.

-Villages and heritage: The Valls de Valira area is known for its impressive 1,000-year-old Romanesque architecture, the best example of which can be seen at Sant Serni de Tavèrnoles, which was once a monastery. For a charming mountain settlement, see Arsèguel, which has a lovely historic quarter full of quaint old stone buildings.

-Gastronomy: One of the most important regional specialities in Alt Urgell is cheese. It’s made from cow’s milk, and is cured for a short time, giving it a soft and buttery flavour. In the Catalan Pyrenees the food is rich and hearty, and includes lots of casseroles with ingredients like pork and wild boar. The rivers that weave through the landscape support an abundance of trout, which also features on many local menus.

-Day trips: Just west of the region is the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, which encompasses a vast mountain wilderness of lakes, soaring peaks and dense forest, and also serves as an important habitat for species of deer, marmots, eagles and chamois. In winter great skiing can be had at Port del Comte to the east of Alt Urgell and Andorra’s resorts to the north.

Weather in Alt Urgell

As Alt Urgell holiday homes are spread across a large region with varied topography and lots of high ground, temperatures can change dramatically from place to place. The valleys are normally warm in summer, with temperatures hitting 25°C. Rainfall is also a little more common here than on the plains to the south, which helps to contribute to the rich and verdant landscapes all around. Winters are fresh or cold, with elevated villages receiving healthy snowfall and temperatures that struggle to get above freezing between December and March.

Travel to Alt Urgell

The airport to choose to get to a holiday rental in Alt Urgell depends on the location of the accommodation. Northern parts of the region can be reached via Perpignan Rivesaltes (PGF), which sits to the northwest and across the border in France. Other areas are closer to Lleida Airport (ILD), which is just over two hours from the town of La Seu d’Urgell. Given the remoteness of many of the villages in Alt Urgell, use of a car is necessary.

Amazing peace

5 of 5
A delightful property in the wilds of the Pyrenees with the nearest neighbours out of sight over a hill. Hot in the day, cool at night because of the altitude, and very comfortable. It is an eco house but is very comfortable. There is much to explore on foot, but you are a bit away from civilization so day trips take a little longer. The road to the house is rough. We got away with a CMax which grounded a couple of times but a 4X4 would be more comfortable. Geordi and Pepona are delightful and helpful hosts and the welcome is warm! I thoroughly recommend it.
