What a brilliant find this flat was! We had a great time. A quiet, comfortable place to relax after a day exploring Aragon. For a stay in a not too well-travelled area of Spain it was perfect.
A well set-out flat with plenty of space and all the amenities you need– a well-equipped new kitchen, Wi-fi, a big tele, a good bathroom with an excellent shower, a washing machine. There was even a roof terrace to sit on and watch the sun go down whilst enjoying a glass of cava! Everything was clean and well maintained and there was a washing machine too. A table tennis table in the entrance hall, which we couldn’t walk past without playing a game!
Alcaniz is a pretty and friendly town with a good selection of bars, restaurants (Bodega and the Cafeteria were two of our favourites), shops and supermarkets. You can sit in the old square, sipping a beer and enjoy watching the storks sitting on top of the cathedral and making their ‘tocking’ noise.
Nearby is the Embalse de Estanca, a lake which has a small and pleasant beach, quiet and with a nice café/restaurant alongside – perfect for a swim and relax. Canoes and pedaloes can be hired there too.
It doesn’t take long to drive to other villages to enjoy the fabulous buildings and views. Fresneda, Calaceite, Valderobles and Moreno (near a decent set of caves) were all beautiful and the bigger (Valancian) walled town of Morella, just a half hour down the road, had a spectacular castle and church.
We were greeted very well and were very happy with the apartment on the first night, though woke to construction work being carried out on the house opposite, though this did not detract from a lovely apartment. The following night however was a different matter. The other empty apartments were filled by families. They quite rightly so, were there to enjoy themselves and sounded like they were having a wonderful time, they arrived late and were up into the early hours, this in itself was not a problem, we appreciate families getting together and having a great time. The problem was the noise in our apartment through the ceiling. Every step, every time the toilet flushed, every time the children played with a toy, every time they used the kitchen, went up the stairs, placed an item on the work surface etc etc, each motion was amplified ten fold, the noise was tremendous to the point of being totally unable to sleep or function.I contacted the owner but there was nothing he could do. He was very sympathetic but the large party that arrived were staying so we asked for our money back and with reluctance, had to move on. This is a serious design fault of the property, and we feel the downstairs apartment should not be rented out until soundproofing has taken place. Top marks to the owner for refunding our money for the extra nights paid, but it didn't seem to come as a shock to him, so we feel that this has probably happened before. We will not be returning or recommending it to anyone.
