Things to do

-Local history. Considered by some to be Galicia’s answer to Versailles, Oca Palace is a dignified 16th Century Renaissance building surrounded by neatly tended gardens. It started out as a fortress but was converted in the 1600s and 1700s. It’s free to enter, and inside you’ll find a beautiful courtyard with an elaborate fountain cut from Carrara marble. Also lovely are the numerous examples of medieval Romanesque architecture in the area – see Santa María de Frades or San Lournzo de Ouzande.

-Nature. With green, wooded valleys and tall hills all around there’s no need to resist the call of the great outdoors. Hikers could walk the circular Mount Cabalar route, which is 11 kilometres long and gives you a good look at local agriculture, natural species, as well as hints of prehistoric human settlement. Adventurous mountain bikers might ride the challenging Rap das Bestas trail, known for both its woodland scenery and tough challenge.

-Coast. 40 kilometres west of A Estrada is the village of Catoira, which sits at the mouth of the River Ulla. On the Arousa Estuary there are some excellent river beaches, and there’s also lots of history here as Catoira was once an important coastal defence – you can see the remnants of its towers - Torres del Oeste, built in the 800s to repel Viking attacks.

-Gastronomy. Pontevedra’s position on the Atlantic coast means the quality of seafood, especially shellfish, is exceptional in this province – mussels, lobsters, scallops and varieties of prawns are all exquisite here. They’re all enjoyed with a glass of the region’s famous Albariño wine, which is known for its distinct aroma, with hints of peach and apricot.

-Santiago de Compostela. Galicia’s capital is 30 kilometres north of A Estrada and has volumes of historical importance. This is partly down to being the journey’s end for the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, which spans the breadth of Spain, and large swathes of western Europe too. In the UNESCO-designated old-town you can explore a wealth of elegant squares, palaces and churches, visiting the 11th Century cathedral, which combines Romanesque, gothic and baroque styles.

Weather in A Estrada

Galicia is known for its mild and damp climate, with neither soaring highs in summer or regular sub-zero temperatures in winter. When packing for your trip to an apartment in A Estrada it’s worth making space for waterproofs, as the region’s famous greenery is the result of regular precipitation at all times of the year. Highs in summer normally peak just below the mid-20s, and the driest weather occurs in July and August. A winter’s day is normally mild and wet, with lows well above zero and highs of 15 degrees.

Travel to A Estrada

Santiago de Compostela (SCQ) is the airport you can use if you’re flying to your A Estrada apartment from abroad. It’s about 35 kilometres from the town, with a couple of connections to the UK – these are generally to and from London, with low-price companies. Once you get there you can follow the AP-53 autopista for a few kilometres, before joining the local PO-841. In this rural part of Spain a rental car is considered the best way for tourists to get around – even the closest train station to A Estrada is in Santiago de Compostela.

This an absolute gem of an apartment.

From the moment we arrived and were greeted by the charming Tina, this place lived up to all expectations. We were unsure what to expect from Santiago D.C, but our apartment enabled us to enjoy the old and the new town,with the minimum of effort. The apartment is modern, well equipped, but above all, has the most wonderful view of the Cathedral from the extremely private garden. I genuinely believe, it would be difficult to find a better place to stay. I would also like to thank our host Victor for his immediate responses, and desire to sort out any questions we may have had before, and during our stay. In conclusion, if you are going to Santiago D C,then do yourself a favour and try to rent this spacious comfortable apartment. Wonderful. :-)
