Make a holiday rental property or self catering accommodation in Hermanus, South Africa your home away from home

Overberg (Overburg) is known as the Whale Coast, at the heart of which is the town of Hermanus, the ‘whale watching capital of the world’. Situated right on the whale route, Hermanus is perfectly situated as a holiday destination, offering a glorious setting and the best land based whale watching you can find. Surrounded by beautiful, natural scenery, the atmosphere in the town is excellent, driven by the hugely welcoming and fun loving residents of the town, and how better to start the day than sitting on the balcony of Hermanus accommodation with a morning coffee, watching whales make their way up the coast to their breeding grounds?

Things to do on holiday in Hermanus, South Africa

Whale watching season in Hermanus runs from July until September, as up to 100 migrate from Antarctica past the Western Cape to give birth. The cliff tops give tourists a bird’s eye view of these magnificent creatures as they pass within 10 metres of the coast on occasions. The coast around the town is not only reserved for whales. Visitors can of course use the glorious beaches to sunbathe on and bathe from, or take a rod and go fishing. The more adventurous visitor staying in a Hermanus property can take to the waters on a kayak or even do a cage dive with sharks!

The town itself has a great amount to entertain visitors too. Adorned with fantastic little shops, art galleries and exquisite jewellery stores using the finest stones in Africa, Hermanus accommodation is a great base for those who enjoy a little shopping whilst on holiday. The restaurants in the town serve simple but absolutely mouth watering meals, especially beef and lamb, meaning that you never have to think about cooking in your self catering accommodation in Hermanus if you do not feel like it! However, the many markets which occur weekly in the towns and villages sell local produce at remarkably low prices, so the option is always there!

The mountains which provide such a stunning backdrop to Hermanus are a further sport and leisure haven. Horse riding, paragliding and walking holidays in the hills thrive due to the excellent scenery and abundance of wildlife. The shear number of bird species makes Hermanus ideal for bird watching holidays too.

Places to holiday in Hermanus, South Africa

Accommodation in Hermanus is a perfect base for exploring the rest of Overburg (Overberg), which is the name of the westernmost cape of South Africa. Here, the meeting of the two oceans makes conditions for surfing ideal for big wave hunters, and there are many who take holiday rentals in the area for just this reason. Golfing holidays in Overburg are hugely popular too, with a huge range of public courses throughout the area. Many feel that the scenery, wildlife and historic places of Overburg are best enjoyed slowly, which is why you will see many people cycling through the Overburg countryside.

Hermanus is around an hour and a half from Cape Town International Airport (CPT), although times may vary as the roads to the area are not very wide! Traffic in the peak season can be quite heavy, but the scenery is so spectacular you do not want to go by to quickly anyway!

A property of the highest quality

5 of 5
This property stands out as one of the best presented we have stayed at on our very many visits and locations in SA. Although it is attached to the owners accommodation the layout provides complete privacy. The kitchen is superbly equipped and there is a high quality Weber to use in the lovely courtyard style garden. Lounge, quality bedroom and bathroom complete a very impressive property. Only slight downside is a slightly iffy wifi. Highly recommend.

Rural beauty

5 of 5
The cottage is in the countryside 10 km outside of Robertson. The space has more windows than you can imagine, which really brings the outside in. We especially enjoyed the quiet mornings with plenty on sunshine. Classic cottage, well appointed, and it was a pleasure to visit. It gave us a glimpse of rural South Africa. The owner was very accommodating to our needs.

what a fantastic beach-house

5 of 5
we have been at this house for three weeks and enjoyed every second of our stay. Direct beach location within the nature reserve brings a unique mix. Nature observation directly from the house coupled with all the amenities offered by the very well-equipped and tastefully furnished and large house. Endless beaches to explore are just a foot step away. Groceries and restaurants are about 10 min by car. Within a radius of one hour by car you can reach a number of unique nature gems such as De Mond and De Hoop nature reserves. A must for the nature lover to visit. Of course there is a multitude of more things to do in the region, best have a look yourself! If you are looking for a tranquil place to "refill your soul fuel" this is your "station" to do so! It never felt that hard to leave a holiday home at the end of the holiday.... . We hope to be able to come back soon! Thank you Riegert & family for sharing this magnificent location with us.
