This charming home from home in the little village of Villa de Frades was just what we wanted and needed. The photos on the web hardly do it justice - there was so much space, the roof terrace was great and the garden and patio was just perfect for relaxing in private. Everything you could imagine needing was there! This was a great base for exploring Alentejo. We had hired a car and went all over - to magical hilltop villages, cork woods, vineyards and olive groves and the wonderful open spaces of the plains. What we hadn't expected was all of the wonderful spring flowers, the fantastic wild life and range of birds - we had many wonderful walks. We would highly recommend this property. It was a wonderful introduction to Portugal and being spring meant that even the 'scotsman' could cope with the temperatures!
This is a very traditional family home, and when the weather is hot, as it was when we arrived, the cool interior and shaded garden where very welcome. The owner was very considerate to us as it was a last minute booking, having been let down on an original at very short notice. The neighbour next door holds the keys, and was very helpful. My limited Portugese being the only difficulty, (note to self, must try harder). The rooms are spacious and well equiped, parking just outside in the street, and it is a very quiet part of the town.
Viana has its own extra ordinary history, with N S do Ayres a couple of kilometers outside the
town. There is access to Evora, about 40 mins drive, the beautiful fortified boarder towns, various lakes and the coast is about 1hr drive, plus if one wanted to get to Lisbon there is a fast road/ motorway connection. The countryside is amazing, and I would love to return in the spring to see the flowers.
