While this city is packed with attractions, a visit here can’t be complete without a trip to the majestic Castelo de Santiago do Cacem which sits on a hill. This magnificent structure was initially built by Arabs but later reconstructed in the 12th century by Christians. Its cubic turret particularly stand out. Next to it is the 13th century parish church that owes its origin to the Knights of the Order of Santiago. Another castle, Castelo Velho, is found on the east of Santiago do Cacem and dates back to the late Neolithic times. While still on this historic discovery trail, visitors will want to also see the Roman ruins of Mirobriga. Looking at the walls and pillars that still stand amid patches of grass, it’s hard to believe that they date back to the Bronze and Iron Ages. All they need to do is take a guided jeep ride through the park to see buffaloes, ostriches, llamas, tigers, giraffes and even kangaroos, among other species ambling about and feeding in habitats that are as close to their real homes as can be. Quiet, with a fantastic sky and views

5 of 5
The small one bedroom house was perfect, the first impression with the gravel roads is daunting, but with each day, we loved it more and more, silent, next to really charming nearby places and beaches, but what sells it is the almost perfect nature surroundings of the actual house. Perfect for relaxing with a good wine, a book, go for a swim in the pool. It's like meditation without the actual meditation. You just fell at peace. Like I said the first impression might not be the best, but you will never want to leave. The houses are charming, have everything you actually need, not what you might want. The TV was a shock. Small with few channels, bit by the end of the stay you really don't even care about "the outside world", you are so immersed in beauty, nature and peace. Really an experience I would recommend to anyone that it's stressed with the daily life. Even if you don't realize it. I want to live in a place like that, and I think the very welcoming owners (that brought fresh homemade bread everyday) felt the same and wanted to give that experience to others. They fell in love and stayed, you will too. Alentejo is beautiful lots of stuff to discover, little treasures everywhere, a beautiful sky, beautiful Earth. It's beach vacation, or country vacation or both. People are friendly, and the food is amazing. But that little house with our little porch will forever be remembered. Loved all of it. Will return for sure, when I have to unwind and be at peace.

lovely little cottage in a beautiful rural location

4 of 5
We had a great holiday in a fantastic location. The pool and out side cooking facilities were great, the house was small but very nice, we wanted to be outside as much as possible and enjoy the beaches and the lovely Alentejo area. Meike and the girls who helped with the horse riding were very friendly and helpful.
