Places to visit on holiday to Santiago do Cacem, Portugal

While this city is packed with attractions, a visit here can’t be complete without a trip to the majestic Castelo de Santiago do Cacem which sits on a hill. This magnificent structure was initially built by Arabs but later reconstructed in the 12th century by Christians. Its cubic turret particularly stand out. Next to it is the 13th century parish church that owes its origin to the Knights of the Order of Santiago. Another castle, Castelo Velho, is found on the east of Santiago do Cacem and dates back to the late Neolithic times. While still on this historic discovery trail, visitors will want to also see the Roman ruins of Mirobriga. Looking at the walls and pillars that still stand amid patches of grass, it’s hard to believe that they date back to the Bronze and Iron Ages. Nature lovers are advised to make their way to Badoca Park where they will see plenty of wild animals. All they need to do is take a guided jeep ride through the park to see buffaloes, ostriches, llamas, tigers, giraffes and even kangaroos, among other species ambling about and feeding in habitats that are as close to their real homes as can be. Those with kids will be delighted to note that the park has a playground built specifically for them.

Fantastic memories of a great week!

5 of 5
Thirteen of us from age 7 to 70! Fantastic house, very well equipped and with plenty of space for everyone! The younger ones loved the pool and the games room; the "less young ones" enjoy the confortable living room and balcony and the "being away from it all". Dana and her husband were fantastic and very helpfull always ensuring that we had a confortable stay. We loved our holiday at Vargem das Colmeias. We will always treasure the memories we made! Thank you for letting us have your house.

Beautiful! Very atmospheric and unique. Lots of charm and character but good modern facilities.

Windmill Hill is just as it sounds ! A windmill on a hill overlooking beautiful countryside and when the weather is fair, a sunny spot to relax and unwind. The Mill, Annexe, garden, courtyard and pool were well maintained and would comfortably sustain a family holiday for 6 particularly in the summer months. Our visit wasn't blessed with best weather sadly but this did not detract from the beauty of the setting or the hospitality that the Mill afforded us. It was pretty chilly in the evening tho' and blankets and hot water bottles ( provided at the property) were put to good use as were the heaters. Cosy inside once the heaters kicked in, the kitchen was simply but well equipped and family suppers were enjoyed around the beautiful large dining table. Fred, the manager, was welcoming and helpful and showed us around on our arrival. The owners were also very helpful and responded to queries efficiently and courteously. We would definitely recommend Windmill Hill to anyone wanting to enjoy peace and tranquility and beautiful countryside. Being almost a two hour drive from Faro it had the additional benefit for us of being removed from the tourist areas. Few people spoke English so it felt that we were experiencing a true taste of Portugal . It is a beautiful place to stay and we highly recommend it.
