Make a holiday villa in Santa Bárbara de Nexe your home away from home

Faro is one of Portugal’s many hidden gems. It is found in the southernmost reaches of the country where the waters of the Atlantic meet the shore. There are many things to see and do in this picturesque locale apart from revelling in the rays of the sun and the soft sand of its beaches. Traipsing through the streets of this city one will feel swept back by the winds of time as they view the whitewashed buildings constructed in typical Moorish style. One of the suburbs that make up Faro is Santa Bárbara de Nexe and here travellers will find holiday accommodation to suit their needs. HomeAway offers Faro tourists holiday villas in Santa Bárbara de Nexe that are conveniently close to the airport. They are spacious, boasting large compounds with some having swimming pools. The closeness of Santa Bárbara de Nexe holiday rentals to shopping centres and restaurants is another added advantage.

Things to do

-Monuments: One of the most poignant monuments in all Portugal is found in Faro; the Capelo dos Ossos which is part of the Igreja do Carmo church. Lined up inside the chapel are the bones of over 1,000 monks who once served there. Those staying in Santa Bárbara de Nexe holiday homes won’t have to walk too far to get to the Church of Santa Bárbara, a Baroque edifice that started off as a chapel in the 15th century.

-Nature trails: Exploring the famous Ria Formosa National Park by boat has to be one of Faro’s greatest pleasures. This stretch of marshland and islands continues along the Portuguese coastline into Spain. There are stopovers on the islands as part of this two and a half-hour excursion. Along the way tourists will be treated to the sight of several birds species.

-Beaches: At the Praia da Faro holidaymakers will get to enjoy plenty of sun and sand in relative seclusion. The beach stretches for miles and miles and makes crowding virtually impossible. For more sun and sand visitors need to head out to the Deserta Island, an uninhabited island not too far from Faro. Here they will have the beautiful golden sands of the Cape of St. Mary practically all to themselves.

-Museums: History buffs as well as art lovers will have no reason to be bored as they will have the Faro Archaeological Museum at their disposal. Don’t be fooled by its size, once inside, one will be captivated by the numerous artefacts on display. Among these are interesting paintworks and charcoal pictures by Carlos Augusto. The building itself with its numerous arches, is a beauty to behold.

-Water sports: To explore the world beneath the surface of the Atlantic, visitors staying in holiday homes in Santa Bárbara de Nexe holiday homes can stop by scuba diving centres that are near the Faro beach and hire gear. Those inexperienced in this kind of activity can be put through their first steps by experts in diving schools.

Weather in Santa Bárbara de Nexe

Visitors to this and any other corner of Faro can expect warm weather at any time of the year they book their Santa Bárbara de Nexe holiday villas except in the cooler period between November and February. From April temperatures ascend into the twenties and keep climbing until the peak of summer in August when average highs of 29°C are experienced. After this the climate gradually becomes cooler as autumn approaches but even as late as November temperatures still linger above 20°C. Winter is mild with January’s average of 16°C being the coldest it gets.

Travel to Santa Bárbara de Nexe

The Faro Airport is only 6 miles away from this locale and visitors planning a stay in Santa Bárbara de Nexe holiday rentals will do well to book flights to this airport. Faro is the main international gateway into the entire Algarve region. Visitors can also fly in through Lisbon’s Portela Airport and take a 2 and a half-hour train ride to Faro, or use a bus for this trip. Buses from Madrid and Seville in Spain are also available.

One of the best, if not the best in Olhos de Agua

5 of 5
This is our ninth extended winter break in this apartment, which speaks for itself. This one bedroom apartment is well-equipped and has been perfect for us as a retired couple. Many apartments are full of 'sad', ageing decor, furniture and equipment. Not so this one. In addition, when things have gone wrong, they have been put right quickly and efficiently. The views from the balcony are stupendous, as shown in the photograph. WYSIWYG; the photos shown are not taken when craning your neck, leaning out at a dangerous angle, and only occurring for 10 minutes at sunrise or sunset. The balcony is very large; there is plenty of room to spread out, which is again unusual. In the winter months, the sun rises just to its left and only disappears around 15h. at the earliest, later as the spring approaches. The local beach, with its active fishing community, is only a 5-10 minute walk down the steps, of which there are many; it may take longer to walk back! For those not wishing to use the steps, the lift down to the public car park six floors below brings you out near beach level. Once on the beach, at low spring tides and when the sand is plentiful, we have walked to Falésia beach and onwards to Vilamoura (a good few kilometres), and also the other way to Maria Luisa beach. Sand amounts do, however, vary considerably from day to day and year to year. In 2017 it would have been a scramble over rocks to make the same walks. We self-cater but even in the winter a few restaurants are open in the evening, more by day. If you have a car, as we do, then the parking two floors below is secure and easily reached by the lift just down the corridor towards the building's entrance. Olhos de Agua is an ideal centre from which to explore the Algarve; to Cape St. Vincent westwards or towards Spain across the Guadiana river to the east, and also inland to the Alentejo. The Algarve does not have the extremes of high-rise development which curse the Spanish costas; the countryside beautiful, and the nearby villages and towns interesting to explore, with lots of surviving old buildings, well-cared for by the Portuguese authorities. One of the best!

Exceptional , Wonderful. Go!

This house exceeded our high expectations. Set in a highly exclusive and very beautiful road right opposite a top class golf course. We loved the championship quality pool table. Best I have ever played on. We swam in the lovely pool every morning and evening, and found it easy to roll the cover back over the pool every evening so the heating could work to maximum effect. Comfortable swimming temperature in February. The fish and vegetable market in the old part of Quarteira was a real find for us. The owner George handled our booking of the villa perfectly. We arrived to find the villa immaculately clean with a bottle of wine left out on the table. The pool and garden maintenance people came twice in out week and kept everything up to the highest standards without ever interfering with our privacy and sense of ownership of the house and grounds. We emailed George a few days before arrival and asked if he knew of how to hire bikes. He found the right company for us. They delivered top class bike to the villa at a very good price. My son and I had brand new suspension mountain bikes and enjoyed great riding along the coast and up on to some challenging off road tracks in the hills north of the villa. We were spoilt for choice with great golf courses, from the world class ones that adjoin the villa to smaller 9 hole courses like Balaia where they welcomed our 9 year old and supplied clubs and shoes for us all. By turning right out of out front drive we were able to walk to the local bakery in 5 minutes and also reach Brown's Sports Club in the same time to play tennis or squash or enjoy good coffee in the morning or drinks and home made hamburgers in the evening. If you can't find the bakery,,,,ask for directions in Browns. Its tucked just down the lane by the orange groves and does great morning pastries. The marina is surrounded by great bars and restaurants. The cinema surround sound in the villa is great so take some DVDs. Thank you for an exceptional holiday!
