Things to do
Praia da Quinta do Lago:
This beach is comprised of clear waters and golden sand and runs from the Ria Formosa to nearby Vale do Lobo. A wooden walkway spans the length of the beach and a handful of restaurants provide terrific views of the Ria Formosa.
The Golden Triangle area of the Algarve is the home of some of the finest golf courses in the region. Nearby Vale do Lobo has the Ocean and Royal courses, while Quinta do Lago has the Pinheiros Altos, San Lorenzo and Quinto North and South courses.
The historic capital of the region, Faro, is only 12 miles from Quinta da Lago. Relics of the 13th century city walls and medieval cathedral can be viewed free of charge. There are also daily boat trips that depart from the city centre to the Ria Formosa marshes and islands.
Sao Lourenco Church:
The earthquake of 1755 destroyed almost every last structure in the Algarve, which is what makes the Sao Lourenco Church so special. This church was constructed in 1730 and completely survived the quake. Blue and white tiles characterise the interior.
Located about 12 miles from Quinta da Lago, the chic coastal town of Vilamoura is home to an impressive marina. Hundreds of yachts dock here, and designer boutiques and fine restaurants line the promenade. The archaeological site of Museu Cerra da Vila is home to original Roman structures including a bath and several mosaics.
12 miles away lies Loule. Remnants of the original 13th century castle are certainly interesting, though it is the daily market that draws the most visitors. Fresh produce, spices and fish draw in tourists and locals. Every Saturday a gypsy market is set up downtown where locals sell their wares.
