Portalegre is the northern region of Alentejo, staggeringly quiet with huge plains and climbing mountain slopes almost completely void of people. There are many signs that civilizations once thrived here, with pre-historic dolmen and menhirs adorning the flower strewn plains, giving Portalegre an almost mythical atmosphere. The few small villages and towns that are found in Portalegre are filled with authentic Portuguese charm, and you are always assured a very warm welcome when you arrive at your Portalegre holiday rental property.

Northern Portalegre is awash with huge medieval castles, many of which have UNESCO recognition, including Marvao, Castelo de Vide and Alter do Chao.

Peaceful and relaxing

5 of 5
My husband and I and our poodle Jodie had a wonderful week here. The weather was kind but we enjoyed staying in in the evenings beside a blazing fire. It is so quiet here and Peter and Rosemary are the best of hosts. We loved picking sweet tangerines off the tree. If you love nature and good walks this is the place for you. it was just us this time but it is three bedroom and very spacious, plenty of room for six. Thoroughly recommend.

Christmas stay in medieval castle apartment

5 of 5
Rodrigo's apartment in the castle walls is an ideal place to stay in the summer or winter. The wood fire gives it a very cosy feel and the views from the wall terrace are beautiful. Rodrigo is a hospitable host who went out of his way to arrange information about local walking routes and places of interest that were not available at the dissapointing tourist information in Estremoz. Estremoz is an authentic sleepy town in Alentejo and an ideal get away for a relaxing break. It is surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards, cork oak's and olive plantations. We would highly recommend both Rodrigo's apartment and Estremoz.

Most delightful, relaxing week in a stunning setting

5 of 5
The house and grounds in Ramila were welcoming and full of surprises. We were expecting to drive everyday to places to keep the children entertained, but during our 6 days, we found at least three lovely walking trails and one of them was the smugglers' route to Spain. The route was so varied and interesting that our 6-year old actually walked the whole 5 and a half hours to the Spanish frontier village and back. Part of the route was a scenic walk along the river Sever, which is fast flowing at places as it snakes through pretty white - somewhat deserted - villages and farmland. We picked walnuts and grapes and found mushrooms - most of them were edible as certified by the kind housekeeper Fatima, who was always available to give us advice and tell us about the area. The setting is out of a dream, and it was our dream holiday. The days when we didn't walk, we drove to the fortress town of Marvao, explored the castle, bought flour and local produce to bring back, and cooked pizza in the wood fire oven as the children and we read by the river. The closest roadside restaurant which is a 5-minute drive from the house, turns out to be a favourite for food connoisseurs and we met people who travelled all the way from Lisbon for lunch! We had two glorious days in late October and swam in the salt water pool made with natural stone and surrounded by ancient olive trees. I can go on....We're already looking forward to returning next Easter or Summer.
