Make a holiday home in Palmela your home away from home

A few kilometres south of Portugal’s capital is a town named after a Roman settler, Palmela. This municipality is made up of five smaller localities Quinta do Anjo, Pinhal Novo, Poceirao, Palmela and Marateca. There are a number of attractions in this area that prompt visitors from all over Europe and beyond to pack their bags for holiday homes in Palmela. First is its location next to the Atlantic Ocean coastline, that makes for unlimited access to prime sunbathing spots as well as sublime ocean views. A few notable monuments are also found here. When it comes to accommodation, HomeAway has an incredible variety of holiday homes tourists to Palmela can choose from. These include lavishly furnished apartments, some of which are in expansive golf resorts. Also available are chalets with marvellous views over the Arrabida National Park.

Things to do

-Monuments: Among the most fascinating sites in Palmela is the Castelo de Palmela which is classified as one of Portugal’s national monuments. This enchanting building is a history lesson on its own and its unique architecture makes for great photography. But the best part of a visit to this historic structure is taking in the panoramas of the Sétubal region offered by this vantage point.

-Food and drink: Holidaymakers spending nights in holiday homes in Palmela will no doubt be pleased to hear that this area has no shortage of great restaurants. among those offering fabulous Portuguese cuisine is the Dona Isilda on Rua da Serrinha. The food is amazing and so are the prices, and so is the ambiance. They could get more or less the same fare from A Charrua on Estrada da Moita.

-Cultural events: Palmela is also known for the great wine produced there. This wine is on the level of the renowned French wines from Bordeaux. Visitors can participate in the local festivals dedicated to these wines. One of the more popular of these is the Festa das Vindimas. It is a lively occasion with a series of shows which takes place every September and culminates in the crowning of the Queen of the Harvest.

-Beaches: Arrabida is famously known as the point where the mountains meets the ocean. There are several great beaches in the vicinity. And not only can visitors milk the delicious rays while lounging on the beaches, they can savour the chance to watch Dolphins prancing in the waters of the Sado Estuary before retiring to their holiday homes in Palmela.

Weather in Palmela

Visitors planning on enjoying a summer retreat in this locale are in for a treat as the temperatures between June and September are perfect for sunbathing. Temperatures range from 26 to 29°C at this time of year and there is practically no rainfall in summer or any other season for that matter, Palmela being semi-arid. Winters are mild with temperature averages remaining in the teens for most parts of even the coldest month, January.

Travel to Palmela

Since this resort is just 25km from Lisbon, most visitors prefer jetting in through the Lisbon Portela Airport. This is Portugal’s busiest airport and tourists from practically any major European city will be able to find a direct flight to Lisbon. There are taxis outside the arrivals but travellers are better advised to make their way out of the airport where they’ll find more affordable taxis. The taxi will drop them at the Roma-Areeiro train station where they can get a train to Palmela. A ticket for this trip will cost less than 4 Euros.

Great to relax and very close to Lisbon!

5 of 5
We spent two weeks at this property last August, and we loved it. We were 3 adults and 4 children and we all had a great time. We very much enjoyed the swimming pool area, the bbq and the huge garden. The hammocks in the pine trees were perfect for taking afternoon naps. The location is really good: the surrounding area is rural, but in fact Setubal (where we ate delicious fresh fish and "choco frito") is only 5 mimutes away. Lisbon, which is really worth visiting, is half an hour away. If you have a sweet tooth don't miss the delicious Portuguese pastries in every café. There are also many good and cheap restaurants, we went out every evening and didn't spend much, really. The house lacks nothing: the five bedrooms were all properly furnished as were the kitchen and the living room. Everything was there: kitchen appliances and china, pots and pans, linens, towels, etc. The kids absolutely loved the football pitch with the goals! It was really good to know that they were outside but totally safe (the automatic gate only opens with a remote control). We also liked the fact that there is an alarm so we felt our stuff was safe when we were out for the day. I highly recommend this property for families with kids, it's the perfect place to relax and yet very near several points of interest. Well done, Flavia! We will be back!
