Things to do

Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário:

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário was constructed in the early 17th century and served as the centre of Olhao community life. Unfortunately it was severely damaged in the devastating earthquake of 1755, but reconstruction allows visitors to get a feel for what the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário originally looked like.

Church of Nossa Senhora da Soledade:

Olhao's Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Soledade is a fine example of Baroque and Roccoco styles. It was the first church of its kind to be constructed here. It once served as a parochial church, but today it is primarily used as a pilgrimage chapel.

Mercado de Olhao:

The bustling local market in Olhao is the perfect place to see and taste local culture. A wide variety of vendors sell fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, and drinks at reasonable prices. Saturdays are the busiest when local craftsmen set up outside the Mercado.

Culatra Island:

Culatra island is found a short distance from Faro. The island is small: a mere four miles in length and less than six-tenths of a mile in width. The beaches on the ocean side are pristine with warm waters. The lagoon side is used primarily for anchoring boats and visiting yachts. A ferry brings travellers directly from Olhao.

Golf:

The Algarve is home to some of the very best golf courses in Europe. Not only are the courses well maintained and beautiful in their own right, but they offer players incredible views of the region. There are three courses near Olhao: Pinheiros Altos, Colina Verde, and San Lorenzo.

Ria Formosa:

The nature reserve of Rio Formosa is comprised of a lagoon and several small islands. Birds use this area during their yearly migration south. There are a few small towns located on the islands that have taverns and cafés, and the beaches are excellent.

Weather in Olhao

Portugal enjoys a sunny, warm climate. Sun is prevalent all year long and the summer months are characterised by temperatures averaging at around 28ºC. Late July and early August tend to be hotter, though the ocean breeze keeps things cool. Winters are mild; temperatures rarely drop below 10ºC. The most rain falls in March. Spring and fall are also nice times to visit; temperatures are in the low-20s and there are fewer tourists.

Travel to Olhao

Olhao is located only nine miles from Faro. Faro Airport (FAO) has connections to most major European cities. Daily trains and buses run regularly between Faro Airport and Olhao. Car hires and taxi rides are also easy options. There are numerous car hire services at the airport, and taxis are abundant.

Lovely rustic villa in great peaceful location

4 of 5
We had a tremendous week here and would definitely go back as this part of Portugal really is a true hidden gem. The people we met were very friendly and helpful and we were made most welcome. The villa is set a mile or so from the peaceful town of Moncarapacho and gives you a great place to wind down after a day out exploring the region. We loved the tranquility of the countryside that surrounded the villa and our son was never out of its own well looked after private pool. The owner went out of his way to ensure our stay was was relaxing; nothing seemed any trouble. Infact the only very minor niggle we had was the last half mile or so of road leading to the house which is a little stony and uneven so a a little care is required negotiating it, but to be honest, we managed a week running up and down it in a small mini car so it shouldn't present too much of a problem. All in all, a characterful place that's slightly off the beaten track but gives one the chance to live the real Portugal. Highly recommended.

A fabulous accomodation

4 of 5
The apartment is fitted to a high standard whilst not losing that homely feeling. Set in a town that has a fascinating history and an excellent base to explore the wonders of the Rio de Formosa. There is something for everyone, with exception of those seeking late night clubs and music.
