Make a holiday rental house or villa in Obidos, Portugal your home away from home

Obidos is a beautifully preserved medieval town on the Costa de Prata, Leiria. The whole town has been declared a national monument in Portugal, and whilst the town defies belief due to the extraordinary wealth of magnificent medieval buildings, it has a great Portuguese atmosphere. A holiday in Obidos is a perfect place for a romantic getaway, with cobbled streets lined by colourfully tiled whitewashed houses and churches.

Things to do in Obidos, Portugal

A holiday rental in Obidos is ideal for those with even a fleeting interest in medieval history. The Medieval Fair in July brings visitors from across the globe, offering a real sample of the Middle Ages, from the theatrical productions to the medieval music. Knights and witches can be found wandering the streets late into the evening. The International Chocolate Festival in November may seem more attractive to some, when huge chocolate sculptures adorn the streets.

At any time of year, the fantastic architecture which dominates the streets is a huge draw. The main square, Praca de Santa Maria, surrounds a beautiful 15th century fountain. This is the best place to start investigating this magnificent town when you arrive at your self catering Obidos holiday rental, as many of the most interesting features of the town encircle the square. Walking around the walls, your eye is drawn to the windmills, vineyards and countryside which surround the town.

A holiday rental villa in Obidos is perfectly situated to take advantage of some of the best golf courses along the Costa de Prata and the glorious beaches of the coast.

Places to go on holiday in Obidos, Portugal

Peniche, just west of Obidos is a beautiful fishing village which is home to some of the best seafood restaurants in the area. If you are looking for a boat to the Berlenda Islands, which makes an excellent day trip from a villa in Obidos, trips leave from Peniche, taking around an hour. These islands are uninhabited, reserved only for bird life. Small boats can be hired for exploration of the rocky coastline, dotted with coves, reefs and caves.

Weather in Obidos, Portugal

The Costa de Prata bathes in beautiful sunshine from May until late October, with average temperatures of over 20˚C. Winters are very mild, staying above 10˚C almost all the time.

Flights to Obidos, Portugal

Porto International Airport (OPO) and Lisbon Airport (LIS) are both within an hour of a holiday rental in Obidos. Twenty British airports connect to both of these airports, so there is no shortage of cheap flights to Obidos.

Excellent base for silver coast

5 of 5
No hesitation recommending the villa which had everything you would need-,the English speaking tv channels were a bonus for the World Cup coverage !! Gary was really helpful at all stages in the process. We had been to the Algarve before but this was our first time in this part of Portugal and we really liked it. With the age of our children we gravitated towards the beaches which were stunning. Rio Cortico beach, a five minute drive away, is quiet even in mid July. Most on the beach are locals and a five minute walk down the beach leaves you in splendid isolation. Baleal beach is 20 minutes away by car and is fantastic- full of life with people of all ages enjoying the surfing, swimming and restaurants. ‘O Febras ‘ restaurant at the Baleal Co-Op opposite the beach was a great recommendation- an innocuous looking restaurant with beautiful , huge, fresh grilled sea bass for €9.90. Our extended family did surf lessons on the beach and we loved it. The villa is within easy reach of the walled town of Óbidos, a UNESCO heritage site, and we were lucky to be there for the annual medieval festival. The villa’s location is rural so you will need a car to get to all places bar the headland at the end of the lagoon which is a 25 minute stroll away. There are a few well priced cafes and restaurants there. Breakfast in Bica da Lagoa was great value (65c for great coffee!) and the Rio Cortico restaurant at the top of the headland had some great fish dishes. The N’aldeia restaurant was also (generally) good. Note that the restaurants are a little out of the way and inventory is kept necessarily tight so they sell what’s available and fresh until they run out! There is also a baker who drives around the lagoon each morning selling freshly baked bread, which was great. So, in summary: the house is perfect, the area is lovely (although we know we only scratched the surface in terms of sights), the area is far less touristy than the Algarve and therefore eating out is much cheaper. Ps: the weather was mixed for the two weeks. I suspect this is unusual for this time of year but it definitely doesn’t get as hot here as it would further south (which would be a positive for many )

Great Apartment in Lovely area of Portugal

5 of 5
We stayed fo 10 days at this wonderful apartment. The apartment is large and modern with 4 different balconies in a great resort. You definitely need a car but you can get to the beach, hotel and clubhouse in around 15 mins or so by foot, but a car is a must to visit all the wonder areas. Obidos was stunning and Lisbon (only an hour away) was a delight - definitely worth at least one day trip if not two. Lots of lovely restaurants and the hotel is lovely with a great spa if you like that sort of tihng. Would definately recommend and if you do go in June there are miles of empty beaches and most of the time we had the pool to ourselves. No noise and a nice temperature at that time of the year. Everything you need for a relaxing holiday thank you ...
