  • A lovely high ceilinged appartment with balcony overlooking the sea, well placed for the Old Town
    5 of 5

Nice, airy third floor apartment, a short walk from the heart of the Old Town. Excellent pavement café right outside, overlooking the sea. (Live music or DJ on Friday and Saturday but not very late and certainly didn't bother us). Our lovely hostess Elsa offers airport pick-up for less than the taxi fare if she's free. Finding the place from public transport drops might be a challenge: find the narrow restaurant packed Rua de Santa Maria and keep walking East (7-8 mins) until you hit the café Barreirinha (mentioned above). If you are more than a couple there are good sofa-bed options or the scary mezzanine. Note that the bathroom entrance is off of the main bedroom. If we return to Funchal we wont be looking for anywhere else.

  • Lovely authentic base in semi-rural location
    5 of 5

Authentic Madeiran feel; good access for Calheta (where we got whale-watching trips), levada (2 minutes walk away), and mountains. Funchal only takes an hour. Comfortable bed and well-equipped kitchen (although no oven [except microwave] or dishwasher [not that important with 2 people]) Quiet location, nice sitting area with view of the ocean. We had meals outside at end of October. Spacious fridge/freezer. Shower and toilet facility small but fine. There is a wood-fired stove that we planned to use to roast the sweet chestnuts we found but didn’t get around to it. Nice feature though. Enjoyed being at the western side of the island. Prazeres seems to have preserved the traditional Madeiran lifestyle. We were very pleased to receive a box of home-grown fruit and vegetables on arrival which lasted the week. And a pot of the owner’s honey!
