An absolute gem

5 of 5
We picked this property based on the fantastic reviews and we were not disappointed. We arrived very very late, it was past 1am when we arrived at the villa but thanks to John's brilliant directions and my husband's reading of them, the taxi driver, who initially took the road to the left of the car park (it should be the road to the right of the car park with the castle walls on your right), got us there no problems, just make sure you take the correct road from the car park at the bottom of the hill. The villa was everything we had hoped for and more...it has a rustic and homely feel but with good kitchen and bathroom facilities, plenty of space to spread out. The gardens are magnificent and the first thing that hits you when you arrive at Casa Sol is the fragrance as you walk up to the house. The kids absolutely loved the pool and definitely made good use of it...we asked for the pool to be heated even though it was mid to high 20s the week we were there. Although the description says the villa is near to the beach you don't actually appreciate just how close it is until you are there...it probably takes about 30 seconds to reach the steps to the beach from the gate. Also, we didn't realise that you can walk to the village via the beach, just head towards the castle, past the rocks and continue towards the rather run down huts...this takes you into the village where you can catch the taxi ferry to Portimau. It takes about 10-15 mins to get to the village this way, and that was with three 5 year olds in tow, this is the most scenic route, the most comfortable on a hot day and less hills to negotiate. We had no problems with the villa, and on the two occasions when I had to call John I had no difficulty getting hold of him. There is no TV at the villa but there is WiFi and we had plenty of devices with us to stay connected. Ferragudo itself is a lovely little village with lots of eateries, definitely a great place to take young kids as there is so much beach and play grounds in the village and on the beach itself. We are already talking about going back next year and we only got home this evening. Warm thanks to John for his hospitality and making the whole process from the booking, to our arrival and our visit so pleasant...we really enjoyed our first visit to Portugal and it definitely won't be our last.

Gorgeous, spacious property

5 of 5
Just returned from a fabulous week at this property. The property is really spacious and was by far enough room for my family of four plus Gran and Grandad. The house has obviously been renovated in stages and the downstairs suite and the en suite of the double bedroom look brand new and very tastefully done. Some of the house is probably still on the list to be done but is still kept clean and functional. The house was very well equipped and had everything we needed for a fantastic holiday. I recommend paying for the pool heating (sometimes when you pay for this on holiday you find it's still freezing... not the case here). The house is split over 3 levels (or 4 if you include the roof terrace) and therefore there is a lot of stairs so wouldn't be great for those with mobility problems. There are also quite large gaps in the railings of the staircase so I think I might have found it hard to relax if my kids had been toddlers, however as my two are past this stage we just saw it as a way to work off some of the extra holiday calories! The owner communicated with me in a really timely fashion and was so accommodating with our requests for an early check in/late check out. The directions from the airport are spot on and it was easy to find. The property though is really made by its location. Ferragudo is such a lovely spot. The village is truely beautiful and has everything you need. The locals that we spoke to were all very kind and helpful. The beaches were great and on your doorstep. I highly recommend a cocktail at Club Nau on Praia Grande! I am certain we'll be back at some point (and I pride myself on never doing the same holiday twice!) Thanks for a great holiday.
