The city of Evora lies on the wide plains of Alentejo Province in Portugal. Known for its stunning ancient centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Evora is a magical place to stay, with views across the plains and the Tagus River for as far as the eye can see, and a lifestyle that is purely Portuguese. The Evora region is one where true Portuguese rural lifestyles live on strong, and there is nowhere finer to escape that to the charming villages of the open countryside around Evora.

Things to do in Evora, Portugal

There is a huge amount to explore from an Evora villa. The ancient town centre is encircled by ancient defensive walls which have been astonishingly well preserved and the monuments within date back from every important historical era in Portugal’s long history. The huge Roman Temple of Diana is an ancient marvel of the highest quality, and should certainly be on any sightseeing tour from Evora accommodation, and the vast Gothic cathedral, the largest in Portugal should not be missed either. In reality, every turn you take will uncover a new treasure, whether an ancient monument, important art gallery or municipal museum.

The Tagus Valley is filled with historic villages that simply ooze charm. The castles of Viana and Alvito are particularly special, but the whole plain is a historian’s dream. Walking, mountain biking and horse riding are especially popular methods of exploring this unspoilt part of central Portugal, far from the usual tourist routes along the Costa de Lisbon and down into the Algarve, and the little whitewashed houses, colourful flower boxes and charming landscapes will forever endear you to the region almost the moment you arrive in your Evora villa. The bird watching is absolutely excellent from a holiday rental in the Evora region. The River Tagus is also a wonderful fishing river, and permits, equipment and local knowledge is easy to come by.

The Evora region is right on the Alentejo Wine Route, with a great number of ancient cellars and lush vineyards to explore and investigate. Local wines are fantastic from an Evora villa, and the restaurants throughout the region serve nothing but the finest local produce, including the wine, providing you with a real taste of rural Portugal.

Places to visit on holiday in Evora, Portugal

The Sao Mamede National Park is just an hour from self catering Evora accommodation. The park encompasses a huge area of plains, as well as four mountain peaks, the highest of which reaches 1,025 metres. More than half of the animal species that call Portugal home can be found in the park, including some magnificent birds, from vulture to eagle, stork to owl.

The weather in the Evora region is much milder than that of the Algarve, yet you can still expect blissfully warm temperatures throughout the summer and autumn, with daily peaks reaching into the mid 30’s (?C) on a daily basis. An Evora property acts as the perfect escape from the British winter too, with daily temperatures in the grips of winter rarely dipping below 15?C.

Travel to Evora, Portugal

Lisbon’s International Airport (LIS), known as Portela Airport, is the closest to a holiday rental property in the Evora region. There are a great range of inbound flights arriving from the UK, with many airlines providing services. Hire cars are in good supply at Lisbon Airport, and it is strongly advised that you hire one for the duration of your Evora holiday.

Really nice house and an experience of rural Portugal

We spent a week touring Portugal, moving between hotels, and then a week based here - good blend. The house is lovely, and something of a Tardis - much bigger inside than you imagine from outside. It was totally clean, comfortable and well equipped - we loved it. We were lucky with the January weather so enjoyed the upper terrace and our only advice would be to trim the cactus outside the courtyard so as to allow the view from the patio. The village is not at all touristy or posh, but we found it interesting to experience. The surrounding area is extremely well farmed. We alternated days driving out to lovely places like Evora, Monsaraz and the Megaliths; and days just "chilling" at the house, with the log fire in evenings.
