The neighbourhood of Calicos lies to north of Albufeira, around a ten minute walk from the centre of the city. Staying in a peaceful residential area such as Calicos can be of particular benefit if you are planning busy days on the beaches and sightseeing, and busy nights of wining and dining, as it offers a quiet base to return to for some well-earned sleep. Accommodation in Calicos is of a high standard, and includes luxury villas and modern townhouses.
Calicos is a small residential area that is just a short walk from the attractions of Albufeira. The city is a family-orientated resort, with something to suit everyone.
Nearly everyone loves the beach, and Albufeira has plenty to choose from. A number of sandy stretches run both east and west from the city, so whether you plan on partaking in water sports, enjoying beach activities, sitting in a beach bar or simply relaxing and enjoying the sunshine, there is an option to suit.
Albufeira also has plenty in the way of bars, cafes and restaurants. ‘The Strip’ is the main bar stretch in the modern part of town, and the place to head if you want to party until the small hours. In the old town you will find more refined cafe-bars and wine bars, allowing you to sip a glass of Portuguese red and soak up the relaxed atmosphere.
The cobbled streets of the old town make for excellent walks, with their whitewashed buildings taking you back in time and street entertainers performing on almost every corner. Places of historic interest here include the 18th century Parish Church, which is recognisable for its bell tower, and the 15th century Misericordia Chapel, which was formerly an Arab mosque.
Whilst staying in Calicos it is recommended that you enjoy a few day trips around the Algarve. A 45-minute trip along the coast will take you to Lagos, which is home of some fantastic parks and gardens, a series of impressive churches and various other sites of cultural interest. Another option is to head a similar distance in the opposite direction to Faro, the biggest city in the Algarve. You could also visit Faro when you first arrive, before continuing on to Calicos.
The Algarve is a popular summer destination due to the fact that you are almost guaranteed sunshine if you visit during this time of the year. Spring and autumn are also good times in which to enjoy a holiday in Calicos, with temperatures usually around the 15-20C mark and relatively low rainfall.
The nearest airport to Calicos is Faro Airport (FAO), 38km away. Flights to this destination can be found from virtually every airport in the United Kingdom, and it is generally one of the cheapest European destinations to fly to. Upon arrival you should drive or take public transport to Albufeira, before making the short journey on to your pre-booked accommodation in Calicos.
