Make a holiday villa in Bordeira your home away from home

Bordeira is one of the neighbourhoods that make up the parish of Santa Barbara de Nexe which is itself part of the larger city of Faro. Faro is a name well recognised in tourist circles; every year thousands of visitors head to the capital of the southern Portuguese region of Algarve to sunbathe on its picturesque beaches, ogle its marina and partake of its rich history. Nature lovers will have the famous Ria Formosa to explore. After revelling in Faro’s plenteous delights, holidaymakers can retreat to the cosy holiday homes in Bordeira offered by HomeAway. These homes include expansive villas commanding spellbinding views over the sea as well as the verdant countryside. They also include lovely renovated farmhouses complete with swimming pools for those scorching summer afternoons. Other facilities those booking Bordeira holiday rentals can expect to find include satellite/cable TV and barbecue facilities.

Things to do

-Historic attractions: Faro is choke-full of relics from the past, why even many of the cars that prowl the streets of this city are models whose production ceased decades ago. A trip to Faro’s Old Town is like stepping into a time machine and zipping back centuries. This section is situated close to the harbour and as one meanders through the narrow, cobbled streets, they’ll come across ancient cathedrals and other antique buildings. There are great restaurants and cafes to snack in as well.

-Museums: While still in that mood of marvelling at past wonders, Bordeira holiday home occupants may want to take a detour into the Faro Archaeological Museum. The captivating Roman mosaics that line the interior and the amazing collection of relics make this place worth a visit. Rivalling them for one’s attention are the charcoal drawings of Carlos Augusto and a series of paintings that depict a fascinating anecdote.

-Boat trips: Visitors can hire a boat from the marina and set out to explore the surrounding islands and the Ria Formosa channels. The Desert Island is one of these islands and this pretty locale is simply heaven on earth. This place is rarely ever crowded and those wishing to enjoy the beauty of the beach and the warmth of the sun in tranquillity will be at home here. Nature lovers will be smitten by the sight of rare birds.

-Water sports: Another way tourists in Bordeira holiday villas and farmhouses can liven up their stay is by hiring diving gear and going for underwater expeditions. There are a number of diving centres that will provide them with all the equipment they need as well as lessons if they’re strangers to scuba diving.

-Food and drink: Faro is home to a string of eateries serving an array of sumptuous Algarvian specialities. A Tasca is recommended for those keen on trying out regional delicacies at prices don’t leave the wallet in shreds. For a more diverse menu, holidaymakers can check out Le Marquis at Monte da Palhagueira which boasts a superb location and intimate ambiance. To dine beachside, visitors should consider the upmarket Camané.

Weather in Bordeira

Bordeira like the rest of Faro enjoys a prolonged sunny season and mild winters. Those wishing to avoid summer crowds can make their reservations for Bordeira holiday homes earlier, in April or May as the warm season will have already began there. They’ll find temperatures in the twenties and no rainfall. But if they cannot help but make their bookings in the traditional holiday months between June and August, they should be careful to stash that bottle of sunscreen among their holiday luggage as temperatures habitually ascend beyond 30°C then. Those into surfing can choose to visit during winter as it is never too cold (temperatures average between 16 and 20°C).

Travel to Bordeira

The Faro Airport is less than 10 miles from Bordeira so visitors coming from outside Portugal will want to book one of the seasonal flights destined for Faro. They could alternatively fly in through the Lisbon Portela Airport and connect to Faro via train. This trip will take about two and a half hours and set them back 20 Euros.

Exactly as described, no embellishments, no white lies, just what it says on the tin.

My wife and I like to have total privacy at least around the pool area and this villa gave us that and more. There are two other villas close by but neither overlook Casa Alfarroba in any way and neither have any barking dogs unlike other areas we’ve stayed. Two other villas not so close by would theoretically be able to spy on the pool but not without military grade binoculars. It was our ruby wedding anniversary when we stayed and as a surprise for my wife I requested fresh flowers throughout the villa and some champagne which were both arranged very stylishly and with no fuss. The flowers lasted our two weeks, the champagne unfortunately didn’t. Another pleasant surprise was the kitchen (my domain on holiday), fully loaded with pots, pans, crockery, glassware and all appliances in full working order including a huge fridge with freezer and a smaller built in beer fridge. We used the downstairs double bedroom with access directly to the heated pool. Lovely comfy bed ensuring a good nights sleep and four steps out to a morning swim before breakfast. Lovely views down the valley to Faro, peace ,quiet and the privacy we enjoy. A good selection of local restaurants with good food a short drive away. A spotlessly clean and well presented villa which we hope to return to next year. Full five stars, no ifs, buts or maybes.

Great villa for a great holiday

5 of 5
This is beautifully presented villa which has everything we and our young children needed for a great holiday. The villa is very spacious, very well appointed and maintained. The tennis court is great and the heated pool is a perfect size with steps leading in. The location is perfect, ten minutes from Sao Bras, fifteen minutes to Loule and half an hour from all the good beaches. The villa is set on a very quiet lane with fantastic views and all the large windows have electric shutters. The garage is great for keeping the car cool and also has table soccer and table tennis. We would fully recommend this villa and will be happy to return.
