Make a holiday apartment in Arrifana your home away from home

Is there a place in Portugal one can get the rich beauty of the southern Portuguese coastline helped down with a dose of local culture, tinged with an Arab influence? Yes, Aljezur, a municipality in the Algarve region. Its very name is derived from an Arabian word meaning ‘islands’. As they explore ancient Moorish structures and the lush green countryside, visitors to this part of Portugal can look forward to spending the night in the comfort of holiday homes in Arrifana. This locality in the Aljezur parish is where visitors can find quiet retreat from holiday crowds and enjoy beautiful leafy surroundings and immaculate views. In addition to the cosy, lavish furnishings the holiday apartments in Arrifana promise, these rentals put holidaymakers within easy reach of the beach. For their those outdoor meals guests will have a barbecue and satellite/cable TV will be available if they need additional entertainment.

Things to do

-Beaches: It’s no exaggeration to say that Aljezur has some of Algarve’s prettiest stretches of coastline. The Praia da Amoreira is a perfect example of this; its fine, shimmering sands stretch into the horizon, ensuring no chance of crowding. Romantic couples can take advantage and embark on dreamy promenades into the sunset and then wind the day with a sizzling meal of freshly-caught fish at one of the beachside restaurants.

-Water sports: Praia da Amoreira, the Arrifana beach and other spots along the Algarve coastline provide perfect surfing venues during the cooler months of the year. Gear can be readily rented from nearby centres and those who can’t surf can ask for lessons from surf schools in the surrounding area.

-Historical sites: One only has to spend a few minutes wandering about the old town to feel swept back in time; everything from the ancient wall to the whitewashed, single-storey houses to the narrow cobbled streets points to the town’s medieval heritage. After they climb up through this section of Aljezur built on a hillside, visitors will come to the remains of a 10th century Moorish castle. Before leaving they can have a bite at one of the riverside cafes.

-Food and drink: Of course visitors can lavish their taste buds with the finest Portuguese cuisine if they’re not up to whipping up a meal for themselves in their Arrifana holiday rentals. There are a number of highly rated eateries in Aljezur including the Cafe Restaurante Primavera. This is where one can get a serving of grilled fish they’ll rave about for years to come, served beside sumptuous sweet potato. For finger-liking-good tapas, try the Restaurante L-Colesterol.

-Nature parks: Aljezur is home to one of Portugal’s, if not Europe’s most beautiful parks; the Costa Vicentina which encompasses the beaches of Amoreira and Arrifana. Visitors can choose to ride into the lush, green hinterland on horseback or bike through the dense cork oak and eucalyptus forests.

Weather in Arrifana

Arrifana enjoys the temperate, mostly warm year-round weather that characterises the Aljezur region. The majority of this locale’s visitors start trooping into holiday homes in Arrifana and Aljezur town’s other parishes as soon as summer’s cloudless skies appear in June. From this month till September, temperature averages remain above 25°C and there is nary a drop of rainfall to be recorded. But the climate does eventually cool, descending into the teens in November as winter arrives. Nonetheless, the coldest it gets it around 12°C.

Travel to Arrifana

Being located in the Faro district, Arrifana is not far from the Faro Airport, the main international gateway into the Algarve region. Most mainstream airlines and low-cost airlines have direct flights to this airport, especially during the peak holiday seasons. To get to their holiday homes in Arrifana, arriving visitors will first have to travel to Faro town on the hourly shuttle. From there they can decide whether to take the bus or train to Lagos. The bus costs about a Euro less. The Lagos-Aljezur journey is a fifty-minute bus ride. This may seem a winding way to travel but the alternative is to spend ten times more by using a private transfer or taxi.

Beautiful, cute, little home with Italianate style garden

5 of 5
Helen is a fabulous, helpful host and a fount of knowledge about the area. The house is small and cute with a beautiful roof terrace and BBQ area and stunning looking pool- freezing cold in winter but the sea is still warm. Aljezur has a lovely (free) castle with great views, public swimming pool and intermarche supermarket. It is about 10-15mins away. There is a closer little supermarket for everyday essentials and restaurants near by. There are a wide range of beautiful beaches to choose from - our favourite was Praia da Amoireira with its lovely clifftop walk. There are lots of walking trails but you need to bring a good map or ask the locals. We enjoyed walking from the campsite near Aljezur down to the beach and other countryside walks. Silves castle is lovely as is the old town plus a stunning drive via Marmelete -check out the Mirador en route. Slightly vertiginous in places. Lagos' beach, Praia da Ana and the nearby headland have lovely stacks and arches to view as well as fossilised shells. We saw storks, egrets, mongoose, wild junipers, crowberries, strawberry trees and more during our stay. Hope you enjoy it as much as us.
