Make a holiday cottage in Arganil your home away from home

Southern Portugal is known for its fine beaches and medieval charm. Places like Vilamoura are renowned for offering golfers the holiday of their dreams. But what about Central Portugal? Visitors here can expect more stunning monuments boasting the eccentric architecture of yore. There are also many museums that provide further information on the region’s rich history. Visitors should also prepare for a heavy dose of Portuguese culture and music. As they revel in the bountiful attractions of the Coimbra region, visitors can rely on HomeAway to provide them suitable holiday accommodation. The range of holiday cottages in Arganil, one of the municipalities in Coimbra will warm the cockles of any traveller’s heart with their woody surroundings and spectacular views. Some of them even have swimming pools complete with parasols and loungers for those lazy summer afternoons. Tenants of these Arganil holiday rentals should also expect such facilities as barbecues and satellite TV.

Things to do

-Monuments: Among Coimbra’s most celebrated monuments is the Biblioteca Joanina at the Paco das Escolas. You don’t have to be a bookworm to fall for the charms of this beautiful library. Its construction began in 1717 under the watchful eye of architect Gaspar Ferreira. With ceilings covered in intricate murals and lavishly decorated doorways, it’s little wonder this centuries-old library is considered one of the prettiest in the world.

-Ancient churches: As evidence of the strong bond between religion and Coimbra’s history there are several medieval churches dotting this part of Portugal. The Igreja e Mosteiro is one of the more fascinating of these edifices and has been made a national monument. Visitors will be enchanted by the lovely arches and ribbed ceiling of this 12th century monastery. The Old Cathedral of Coimbra is one of Portugal’s most important Romanesque churches.

-Museums: More on this region’s heritage can be found in the museums of Coimbra. Materials used to teach Mathematics and other subjects in the 17th century can be seen in the Cience Museum. These materials mainly consist of Azulejos, decorated square tiles. The Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro contains a lot on Roman history.

-Concerts: To get a taste of Portuguese culture, residents of Arganil holiday homes will want to visit the fado houses of Coimbra. These are places where they can enjoy live music by talented local artists as well as rub shoulders with locals in a lively atmosphere. One of the more popular of these establishments is the aCapella on Rua do Corpo. As they snap their fingers to the captivating tunes, revellers can also feast on bitings and sip their choice poison.

-Nature: Coimbra has its fair share of greenery and those who are nature lovers or just need the verdant serenity of trees to relax can visit the Choupal National Forest. Here they can walk through the trails at a leisurely pace drinking in the peaceful ambiance or stop at the cafeteria and have a drink. Another place in this locality that can serve the same purpose is the Jardim Botanico. This park is particularly popular with romantic couples.

Weather in Arganil

For most of the year Arganil basks in glorious sunshine, only subdued in the months between November and February. This is, of course, winter and it is mild by any standards. Temperature averages at this time usually fall between 14 and 18°C. Showers can be expected at this time as well though October is the rainiest month. Summers are hot and dry and sun-seeking travellers destined for Arganil holiday cottages and villas should not forget their sunscreen and hats. Temperatures above 30°C are not uncommon, especially between July and August.

Warm welcome - beautifully clean property

4 of 5
Martine and Dirk kindly waited for our delayed arrival, and welcomed us warmly with a lit fire and plenty of very much needed food and drink after a long journey. The house was exceptionally clean and well stocked with shampoo, Dove bars and loo roll. Also, plenty of towels and great kitchen equipment. We really enjoyed use of the bikes and proximity to lovely countryside and found umbrellas handy too! Although we had mixed weather, some of us braved the pool - and the BBQ was fun. We enjoyed the doors opening onto the exterior on both levels, and the garden's lawns and some lovely irises in flower in the raised beds and a young fig tree by the gate. Please plant an orange and lemon tree for the benefit of future visitors! We found this part of Portugal to be really interesting and varied - and very friendly. Many thanks.

Gorgeous rural retreat with masses of living space

5 of 5
We enjoyed a fabulous weeks stay at Villa Pianola and were thrilled to have found the property, having originally enquired about another villa the owners were offering, but had already rented. They suggested we look at this house and we were so pleased that we did! James and Heidi couldn't have been more informative and welcoming in the run up to our arrival, checking our flight times and leaving wonderful food in the fridge when welcoming us at the villa. They were so helpful and friendly yet left us alone to enjoy a heavenly week. We spent most of it by the pool and padding about the house such is its cleanliness, comfort and space. And for anyone that loves playing the piano, this property is a must. Later in the week, as we started to explore the amazingly picturesque local area, we felt we perhaps should have got out sooner! There is so much to see and do around this villa, much of it centering on eating fabulous food in friendly restaurants and wild swimming in beautiful gorges and outdoor rivers, and the beach isn't too much of a drive for those that want to see the coast. The supermarket is so close too, but otherwise you are treated to nothing but peace and quiet, wonderful sunsets over the hills and balcony, and blue skies. The space in the house is unrivalled. We were spoilt for choice for bathrooms, storage and dining options and the master bedroom is simply huge with amazing views. The pool is of ample size to splash about and cool off in, and to play games. We have booked to return to Portugal again this year, once again in one of James and Heidi's properties, so good was our experience. We would recommend this villa to anyone wanting to enjoy a family holiday in amazing surroundings in this fabulous, very friendly, part of the world.
