-Medieval buildings: Leiria is known for being home to a number of grand, well-preserved castles, fortresses and churches. The Fortaleza de Peniche was once an important military installation for the Portuguese. It fell into disuse after the end of the wars and was recently converted into a museum containing many interesting exhibits accompanied by information on Portugal’s eventful history.

-Ancient churches: Medieval churches form a huge part of Leiria’s heritage and the 17th century Igreja da Misericordia is one of them. The ceiling of this church is its key attraction as it is the canvas on which several paintings representing scenes from the New Testament were done by leading artists of that era. Perfect in every aspect

The apartment was perfect, it’s view and position, in relation to the beach was perfect. Just the right amount of walking distance to the beach and the bars. Foz itself was beautiful. The restaurants where excellent and the sunsets where breathtaking. The only downside was from the apartment below, they had two dogs, which were left out in the heat all day. Always barking at any passers by. As dog lovers this was distressing to witness. However, this would not stop us from returning, Foz is without doubt the most magical place we’ve stayed in

Excellent base for silver coast

No hesitation recommending the villa which had everything you would need-,the English speaking tv channels were a bonus for the World Cup coverage !! Gary was really helpful at all stages in the process. We had been to the Algarve before but this was our first time in this part of Portugal and we really liked it. With the age of our children we gravitated towards the beaches which were stunning. Rio Cortico beach, a five minute drive away, is quiet even in mid July. Most on the beach are locals and a five minute walk down the beach leaves you in splendid isolation. Baleal beach is 20 minutes away by car and is fantastic- full of life with people of all ages enjoying the surfing, swimming and restaurants. ‘O Febras ‘ restaurant at the Baleal Co-Op opposite the beach was a great recommendation- an innocuous looking restaurant with beautiful , huge, fresh grilled sea bass for €9.90. Our extended family did surf lessons on the beach and we loved it. The villa is within easy reach of the walled town of Óbidos, a UNESCO heritage site, and we were lucky to be there for the annual medieval festival. The villa’s location is rural so you will need a car to get to all places bar the headland at the end of the lagoon which is a 25 minute stroll away. There are a few well priced cafes and restaurants there. Breakfast in Bica da Lagoa was great value (65c for great coffee!) and the Rio Cortico restaurant at the top of the headland had some great fish dishes. The N’aldeia restaurant was also (generally) good. Note that the restaurants are a little out of the way and inventory is kept necessarily tight so they sell what’s available and fresh until they run out! There is also a baker who drives around the lagoon each morning selling freshly baked bread, which was great. So, in summary: the house is perfect, the area is lovely (although we know we only scratched the surface in terms of sights), the area is far less touristy than the Algarve and therefore eating out is much cheaper. Ps: the weather was mixed for the two weeks. I suspect this is unusual for this time of year but it definitely doesn’t get as hot here as it would further south (which would be a positive for many )
