Make a holiday villa in Amoreira your home away from home

With lovely temperate Mediterranean climate, acres of stunningly beautiful countryside, dotted with grand monuments, it’s not hard to understand why thousands of tourists make their way to holiday homes in Amoreira, in central Portugal every year. Amoreira is but a small part of the district of Leiria. This locality’s towns boast a collection of attractions that will keep visitors engaged for the duration of their stay. And as one would expect, residents of holiday villas and apartments in Amoreira will have a great selection of classy restaurants to have their meals in. Tucked away in the quiet villages of Leiria are superb, luxurious villas spacious enough for large groups and equipped with a host of facilities including swimming pools and satellite TV. But what will amaze guests most is the elegant, tasteful furniture that adorns these holiday rentals offered by HomeAway.

Things to do

-Medieval buildings: Leiria is known for being home to a number of grand, well-preserved castles, fortresses and churches. The Fortaleza de Peniche was once an important military installation for the Portuguese. It fell into disuse after the end of the wars and was recently converted into a museum containing many interesting exhibits accompanied by information on Portugal’s eventful history.

-Ancient churches: Medieval churches form a huge part of Leiria’s heritage and the 17th century Igreja da Misericordia is one of them. The ceiling of this church is its key attraction as it is the canvas on which several paintings representing scenes from the New Testament were done by leading artists of that era. There are two monasteries in this part of central Portugal occupants of Amoreira holiday homes will also want to visit; the Mosteiro da Batalha and the Mosteiro de Alcobaca.

-Beaches: Not far from Amoreira is the fishing village of Peniche which leads to the sea. Apart from admiring the fishermen go about their trade in the traditional way, visitors can make the most of the sun and sand on beaches such as the Praia do Pedrogao. As they admire the sea views and promenade the stretches of soft sand, visitors can also savour fresh fish dishes from seaside eateries.

-Berlengas: While still in Peniche visitors will want to take a tour of the Berlengas Archipelago. It makes for an exciting piece of hiking and the views these masses of rock offer are second to none. There are also caves to be explored. Nature lovers and shutterbugs will not be in a hurry to leave.

-Food and drink: Tourists staying in Amoreira holiday rentals looking for a place to enjoy a meal in an intimate, romantic atmosphere should consider an evening in the aptly named Malagueta Afrodisiaca. Among the items on this restaurant’s extensive menu are vegetarian specialities. And apart from Portuguese cuisine, guests can taste the flavours from many other countries including Oriental and South American dishes.

Weather in Amoreira

This locale enjoys the excellent temperate conditions associated with Mediterranean areas. Those planning on making reservations for Amoreira holiday homes in summer should expect temperatures averaging between 27 and 35°C. Those who choose to arrive for their holidays a bit earlier should prepare for rainy weather as April and May experience plenty of rainfall. Summer visitors should have no such worries as Leiria is hot and dry between June and August. Winters are relatively mild with temperatures hovering between 15 and 7°C.

Travel to Amoreira

Most of Amoreira’s visitors coming from outside Portugal fly into the country via the Lisbon Airport. Direct flights to Lisbon Airport are available from most any major European city both by low-cost carrier and mainstream airlines. From here visitors can travel to Leiria by road on the A8 via long distance buses. This trip usually takes between 1 and 2 hours.

Excellent base for silver coast

5 of 5
No hesitation recommending the villa which had everything you would need-,the English speaking tv channels were a bonus for the World Cup coverage !! Gary was really helpful at all stages in the process. We had been to the Algarve before but this was our first time in this part of Portugal and we really liked it. With the age of our children we gravitated towards the beaches which were stunning. Rio Cortico beach, a five minute drive away, is quiet even in mid July. Most on the beach are locals and a five minute walk down the beach leaves you in splendid isolation. Baleal beach is 20 minutes away by car and is fantastic- full of life with people of all ages enjoying the surfing, swimming and restaurants. ‘O Febras ‘ restaurant at the Baleal Co-Op opposite the beach was a great recommendation- an innocuous looking restaurant with beautiful , huge, fresh grilled sea bass for €9.90. Our extended family did surf lessons on the beach and we loved it. The villa is within easy reach of the walled town of Óbidos, a UNESCO heritage site, and we were lucky to be there for the annual medieval festival. The villa’s location is rural so you will need a car to get to all places bar the headland at the end of the lagoon which is a 25 minute stroll away. There are a few well priced cafes and restaurants there. Breakfast in Bica da Lagoa was great value (65c for great coffee!) and the Rio Cortico restaurant at the top of the headland had some great fish dishes. The N’aldeia restaurant was also (generally) good. Note that the restaurants are a little out of the way and inventory is kept necessarily tight so they sell what’s available and fresh until they run out! There is also a baker who drives around the lagoon each morning selling freshly baked bread, which was great. So, in summary: the house is perfect, the area is lovely (although we know we only scratched the surface in terms of sights), the area is far less touristy than the Algarve and therefore eating out is much cheaper. Ps: the weather was mixed for the two weeks. I suspect this is unusual for this time of year but it definitely doesn’t get as hot here as it would further south (which would be a positive for many )

Lovely Villa A++

Beautiful villa, very modern. We had a great time and would highly recommend. For us a car was a must, but if you like a scenic walk it doesn't get much better Many thanks to all.
