Perfect

It's difficult to find fault with either the accommodation or the host of this charming bungalow on the crest of a hill in rural Portugal. However, you won't believe this is a real review unless I do, so in December and January, when the nights dropped below zero but the house was snug and warm, there was a fair amount of condensation in the bathroom and kitchen, but that's nothing to the positives. The bungalow itself is part of a larger quinta where the owner's parents live, but it has its own gates and driveway and our privacy was respected. The house is a single story modern build, licenced as a holiday let, with a large lounge/diner, two bedrooms, a kitchen and bathroom. The kitchen is fully equipped with stove, dishwasher, washing machine, coffee machine and everything else you would want if you're not going to try any of the delicious restaurants in the area (and if you're not, why are you in Portugal?). The bathroom has a sink, shower, loo and bidet. The main room has cable TV and a hifi. The lounge has a couch, chairs, dining table and (as we were there midwinter) a very efficient pellet stove. But it's all the little extras that make you feel welcome. Ourico supplies various folders with things to do, places to see and eat and market days in the various towns. He even supplies a Tomtom with the places pre-registered in it. There's wifi, a series of DVDs and books in English and Portuguese and even some games. His English is perfect and he's keen to help further if there's anything else you need. The village is small and quiet. There are no local cafe or shops, so you will need a car (though if you're up for it, there's a fantastic restaurant, cafe adeil luis in vale florido a two mile walk away) As we were there over Christmas and New Year we even got a mini Christmas tree on the table and some Christmas goodies. Not the place for night clubbers, but I can't recommend this charming village treat for those that want to immerse themselves in Portuguese countryside.

A quiet relaxing property with superb facilities

5 of 5
As a family of five (kids: 18,13 and 12) we were initially struck by the well planned layout - providing plenty of space inside and an outdoor area and pool to enjoy. The property was very well maintained. The ideally sized pool was great for us all with plenty of loungers, eating area and swinging seats too. The huge barbecue was used regularly. The poolroom was amazing - complete with fridge and stereo (the kids got to experience proper LPs!). All of this really just describes the facilities though. Chris the owner ensured we had everything we needed, from knowledge of the locality to possible days out. The weather was consistently excellent and there was a variety of places to visit and to eat out at. The area is unspoilt and yet there were opportunities to try kayaking, outdoor pursuits and swimming within a short drive. The local cafe in nearby villages and towns were great. Sitting out by the well lit pool looking out at the lights in the distance with a cold glass of something was the perfect way to end each day. The greatest complement I can give to Chris and his home is that within a fortnight of returning home we were booked for the following summer. As two busy parents, this was an ideal place to relax and spend time as a family.

Two weeks in September - What it says on the tin & more

5 of 5
Casa Marques is a charming holiday cottage nestling on a south facing hillside with uninterrupted views stretching as far as the eye can see over wooded hills and valleys. A large swimming pool with comfortable loungers is where we spent most of our days taking turns to climb the dozen steps to replenish glasses of gin and tonic with ice from the freezer and lemons and limes plucked from trees in the garden. Shopping presented no problem whatsoever there being a well stocked supermarket with helpful staff, including a butcher who advised us on the best choice for the barbecue, only a few miles away. We also topped up our provisions when stopping at our "local" minimarket/café for a coffee or beer. Here despite their English being on a par with our Portuguese we always came away with a smile and exactly what we needed! The villa's purpose built barbecue we found invaluable being so easy to light and to cook on. We found driving in this part of Portugal no bother at all with motorway access about 100metres from the airport, stretching to about 15 minutes to Marques itself and minor roads practically devoid of other users. All in all a great holiday for chilling out and one that we wished we had stayed longer
