Make a holiday apartment in Altura Town your home away from home

Tucked away in the south-eastern reaches of Portugal in the Algarve region is a fairly developed town that hosts a selection of shops, restaurants and bars. Visitors touring Algarve usually put up in holiday homes in Altura Town, being drawn there by the fact that it is relatively unspoilt and tranquil. This location also puts them within easy reach of the Atlantic Ocean coastline where they can bask in abundant sunshine or indulge in any one of several water sports. Altura is a picturesque spot where migratory birds are often spotted. HomeAway offers sun and adventure-seeking tourists an interesting range of holiday accommodation in Altura Town. Waterfront holiday villas and apartments are the most sought-after kind of holiday rental here. But even those who don’t manage to secure such accommodation will still have plenty of options to choose from that are not far from the beach.

Things to do

-Beaches: Most holidaymakers’ ideal holiday features hours spent stretched out on soft sands watching their skin turn a rich bronze. And the lengthy coastline of Altura will give them the opportunity to live out this fantasy. This coastline forms part of the protected Parque Natural da Ria Formosa which means visitors will enjoy the beauty of the beach without the congested hotels and entertainment spots that characterise other seaside locations.

-Hiking and biking: Those staying in Altura Town holiday homes will have acres upon acres of lush flora to hike through. The protected area of Ria Formosa supplies nature lovers with expansive marshlands and on climbing the heights of the Cacela Velha cliffs, hikers will have incredible panoramas at their disposal.

-Golf: Golfing enthusiasts who travel to this part of Portugal won’t be disappointed by the quality of courses available here. Tourists residing in Altura Town holiday rentals won’t have to journey more than 15 minutes before finding a top-class golf course where they can practice their swing while taking in some scintillating views. The Jack Nicklaus course which was designed by the golfing legend is a must-visit.

-Spain day trips: Spain is but 6 miles from this locale and it is well worth the short trip to cross the border. This will give holidaymakers whose palates have never experienced the wonderful clash of flavours that typify authentic Spanish cuisine the opportunity to indulge their taste buds. While one can enjoy these treats in the town of Ayamonte which is immediately after the border, it’s worth venturing further on to Sevilla.

-Tavira: If going to Spain seems a bit out of the way, visitors can head to the nearby town of Tavira. This will bring them face to face with astounding ancient buildings and traces of Roman occupation such as the bridge and city walls. While here holidaymakers can get to enjoy the taste of well-prepared fresh fish at ambient restaurants that overlook the ocean.

Weather in Altura Town

The weather couldn’t be more ideal for holidaying than it is at this corner of Algarve. Apart from the short cold season between November and February, holidaymakers can literally choose any month of the year for their stay in Altura Town holiday homes. From April to October this locale enjoys temperatures above 20°C with the hottest period being between July and August when temperatures average at 29°C. The cold season is not the typical sub-zero affair of other European localities. Temperatures during this time of year will rarely go below 15°C.

Travel to Altura Town

The Faro Airport is the main gateway to the Algarve region and visitors flying in from outside the country will want to book flights that land here. From this airport they will have 28 miles to travel in order to reach their Altura Town holiday apartments and villas. While taxis and rental cars are easily accessible from the airport, they may be a bit expensive. There are buses, however, that can take holidaymakers over this 45-minute journey for less.

Fantastic villa, great location

4 of 5
We were a party of 10 ranging from 1 years to 74 and the villa offered the space required by 3 families. The two master suites on the first floor were a fantastic size and are able to accommodate a full family of 4 if required (with small kids!). Both suites open up to the top balcony and although we rarely used them they provided some privacy if you wanted to just get away from it all. The kitchen area was well equipped and again a really good size with a separate room for washing. Possibly the only area that was smaller than expected was the living area, although this was open plan with a large dining table and to be honest there were rarely times that we were all trying to sit in together! The outside area was fantastic. Plenty of sunbeds and tables/chairs. The pool was a fantastic size and the baby pool a good addition. We also made use of the table tennis and pool table in the evenings, these were a bonus. At the side of the villa was a large chest which was full of useful items like goggles, floats and toys for the pool which was really helpful in the first few days before we went out and about shopping. The location of the villa was excellent. Although a good 30 minutes (leisurely) stroll to the beach. Half way to the beach on the main road there is a shop selling ice lolly's and cakes. We would get an ice lolly to continue our walk down to the beach, and then buy cakes on our way back to the villa, they were a big hit! The town of Altura was much larger than i had expected with plenty of bars and restaurants and the beach was spectacular with lovely white sand. We had a car and I would definately recommend hiring one for grocery shopping and getting to local villages, although you could easily arrange taxi hire. The local area has plenty of places to visit, we went to Tavira, where we went shopping in the large shopping complex and went on the local tourist train. We also went to Monte Gordo which was a very nice and much larger resort than Altura. Again the beach here was beautiful. All in all a fantastic holiday was had by all, the 10 nights we spent went in so quickly and I would highly recommend the villa. Other review left with very negative comments, i would assume was just bad luck, as any queries we had were answered and resolved very quickly. The only reason I haven't given five stars is that some of the fittings in the villa such as tv are not quite at a 5 star standard, however these weren't main priorities!
