Make a holiday rental home or villa in Almadena, Portugal your home away from home

Almadena sits on the outskirts of Lagos, and represents a popular choice of base for visitors to the region. Part of this can be attributed to its position – on the fringes of a Natural Park and within a short distance of the beaches. The attractions of Lagos are also within easy reach, so if you are seeking a traditional village for a relaxing family holiday, this may be it.

Things to do in Almadena, Portugal

The village of Almadena is a ‘small and friendly’ alternative to staying in the cities of the Algarve region. The main highlight of the village is that it is set in the Alentejano e Costa Vicentina Natural Park, giving Almadena a rural feel to it, despite its close proximity to other towns and cities. The park is the biggest protected area in Portugal, and an impressive combination of beaches and hinterland.

Almadena has basic amenities, and those seeking a large supermarket will have to head outside of the village. You could, however, spend your evenings out of the house, as Almadena has a number of excellent restaurants that charge only a fraction of some of the more tourist-orientated eateries elsewhere in the region. Another option is to pick up some fresh produce at the local farmers’ market and try your hand at creating a pork or chicken dish in the local style.

The centre of Lagos is less than 10km from Almadena, and the old town is a great place to enjoy a drink or meal outdoors in one of the many restaurants that line its cobbled streets. This is also where you will find more in the way of shops, supermarkets and bars, as well as various sites of historical and cultural interest.

Places to visit on holiday in Almadena, Portugal

The western end of the Algarve is generally regarded as the less touristy side, and attractions in the area tend relate more to relaxation than exertion. The beaches are a particular highlight, with the EU Blue Flag beach at Luz one of the best in the area. Another day trip worth considering whilst holidaying in Almadena is Burgau – a small town that has historic attractions, such as a Capuchin monastery and the 17th century Chapel of St Leonard.

Weather in Almadena, Portugal

Almadena and the surrounding region receives a Mediterranean – Subtropical climate, meaning summer months are a great time to visit, as the weather is hot, sunny and almost always dry. That is not to say that a holiday in Almadena cannot be enjoyed outside of this period, as even in winter the average temperature is around 12C.

Flights to Almadena, Portugal

In order to get to your self-catering accommodation in Almadena you should book a flight to Faro Airport (FAO), which is 97km from your destination – a journey that will take around an hour. Flights to Faro are generally low cost, with a number of budget operators heading to this airport.

Part of a lovely villa in an ideal location close to towns and beaches

4 of 5
Very good size apartment for family and friends in an ideal location close to the towns of Lagos and Luz and easy driving to both South and West coasts. Beautiful private pool shared only with the owners when they are there. Sun loungers provided together with an outdoor eating area. The owner and daughter were there during our stay and we didn't have any disturbance at all. Almadena has a convenience store for your essentials and there are a couple of cafe/restaurants within a 5 minute walk which is useful if you don't want to drive. My wife and I had a very enjoyable stay and do hope to return next time we holiday in the Algarve. The only comment was my wife found the bed rather firm for her liking but I slept really well. You can't please everyone.

This was my 2rd visit to this wonderful villa, We had a lovely holiday in this house with friends. The villa is very well equipped with lovely kitchen. It’s perfect with the children. All that you need is there including UK TV and very fast wifi. Four large bedroom perfect for eight people. The location is perfect in a quiet residential area and just a walk into the village. If you are looking for a house to relax and with a secured swimming pool for children, this is the house you need Thank you Ian for a great holiday, We will be back soon !!! Zoë & PY
