Make a holiday rental property or holiday villa in Alentejo, Portugal your home away from home

Alentejo is one of the four main regions of Portugal, bordering the Algarve to the south. Known as Portugal’s bread basket, Alentejo is a huge, open area of countryside although the landscape does vary dramatically from the granite hills of the north east to the open plains of the south. Holiday villas in Alentejo are perfect for those wishing to truly relax, recuperate and recharge whilst on holiday, as the tourist crowds have not yet discovered Alentejo, which has one of the most blissfully peaceful way of life you can find!

Things to do on holiday in Alentejo, Portugal

The Parque Natural de Serra de Sao Mamede is a beautiful park, engulfing not only beautiful swathes of the country, but also a handful of atmospheric medieval villages. The Parque Natural do Vale Guadiana to the north is also well worth a visit from a holiday villa in Alentejo, especially for walking and to use the secluded, sandy beaches which line the west end of the park.

Alentejo is steeped in history from across the ages, with clear examples of Roman and Arab constructs, as well as dolmens, cromlechs and sturdy medieval castles. There are a huge range of impressive historic sights to see across the region, but the most dramatic have to be the Estremoz Castle in Pousada, the gigantic Elvas Aqueduct and Castle, Castelo de Vide or the remains of the Roman Temple in Evora.

Alentejo is also a great destination for quite beach holidays. An Alentejo property along the west coast of Alentejo around the town of Sines on either the Costa Dorada to the south or Costa da Gale to the north will provide some of the most authentic Portuguese beach holiday experiences available. The unspoilt, wild, sand beaches of the Atlantic are a favourite destination for surfers and windsurfers, who descend on holiday villas in Alentejo during the summer months. The many reservoirs which adorn this dry countryside were originally created to ensure water for residents, but now sailing, water skiing and windsurfing thrive on them.

Although a holiday villa in Alentejo is usually taken for a peaceful, relaxing break, you can get the adrenaline pumping around your body here. The countryside is ideally suited to mountain biking, and the skies above Alentejo are often dotted with hot air balloons and skydivers taking to the air for a combination of adrenaline and breath taking views.

Places to holiday in Alentejo, Portugal

The coast of Alentejo falls into the sub-region of Alentejo Litoral, so if you are looking for a beach holiday whilst in the region, a holiday villa in Alentejo Litoral is the perfect solution.

The three major cities in Alentejo are Evora, Portalegre and Beja.

Evora lies at the heart of the region and has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the perfectly preserved town centre. It is often accredited with being the finest example of ‘golden age’ Portugal, with the ancient walls still protecting the many monuments from throughout the ages which can be found within, including the famous Diana’s Temple.

Portalegre is a region of Alentejo bordering Spain, with a long tradition of mystery and mythology. Dolmens adorn the landscape, situated between ancient manor houses and ancient battle fields. The delightful Serra de Sao Mamede is in the region, which is a perfect place to walk or cycle. The area is also a great destination for off road driving, horse riding and golf. The many dams and lakes are ideal for water sports, and there are two centres in the region, from which you can take lessons, hire equipment or try your hang at a large range of sports from a holiday villa in Alentejo.

Beja is one of the most unspoilt regions to take an Alenteja property. The architecture is delightfully graceful, and the countryside is open and peaceful.

                                    Oasis in Alentejo

Monte da Quinta is an oasis in Alentejo. Located within easy walking distance from Castro Verde, a nice small town with good restaurants, it overlooks the beautiful landscape. Everything is fully renovated and extremely well kept. We lived in Casa Oliveira - it is spacious and was perfect for a family of four. Michaela and Nigel are excellent hosts, dropping by from time to time with fresh vegetables from their own garden, fresh towels and knowledge about the area.

Excellent location for a relaxing holiday

                                    5 of 5
I have stayed at Monte da Quinta on several occasions and always had a fantastic time. This year there have been some minor improvements to the properties which made our stay even more relaxing, namely a larger fridge/freezer making it easier to keep the delicious wines from the local vineyards cool and a dishwasher to avoid the tedium of washing up the glasses! The property is beautifully clean, with fantastic views a lovely pool, loungers to sunbathe on and a shady terrace to retreat to when it is just too hot. Castro Verde is a short walk away and has a good selection of quality restaurants and bars but without the hustle and 'brits abroad' of the Algarve. There is plenty to do in the local area, whether it is vineyard tours, eating some of the best food in Portugal, hot air ballooning, quad biking, horse riding, spa's etc. Monte da Quinta makes a wonderful base for a fantastic relaxing holiday. I am sure we will continue to return.

                                    Perfect Spot

                                    5 of 5
The house is an "L" shape around a lovely pool where there is plenty of shade from the midday sun. It is well furnished and comfortable. We stayed with our children (aged 18 and 20) and their friends who, because of the close proximity of Lagos itself, where able to go into town in the evening with only a short (and cheap) taxi ride home. The owners live next door. They keep themselves to themselves but are on hand if you need anything. We would highly recommend it.
