  • Spotless fabulous apartment in the heart of the seafood capital of Europe!
    5 of 5

The apartment was absolutely spotless, spacious and modern with excellent WiFi, separate shower and bathrooms, and fabulous views from every window. It's a very short walk from Matosinhos' glorious beaches, and right in the middle of the best street for seafood in Portugal. There are 2 fast lifts, 1 of which opens right next to the apartment door. It couldn't have been better and is so much more comfortable than a standard hotel family room I wondered why I ever bothered with hotels in the first place. The owner, Mr Valentin runs the best restaurants on the street and Celso the agent got the WiFi fixed within the day. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone, but I feel I need to just say that the aircon is not working in the 3rd floor flat and doesn't look as though it's going to get fixed any time soon. The owner provided a tower fan and northern Portugal isn't much hotter than a good UK summer anyway, so it didn't bother us. Matosinhos is a fascinating place that's on the 'up' as they say and once you get the hang of how to spend less than £150 in the glorious restaurants every night, you'll love it. You could save a fortune by eating lunch in one of the many friendly patisseries. The local small custard tarts are a must with a coffee. Everyone is friendly and most places are incredibly good value. The small local museums are well worth dropping into if you go for culture, but, aside from the food and the haunting ruined tile fronted villas threaded through the old town, the sea is the main draw. Factor 50 all over on day 1 guys!! Note: the working docks can be seen over the rooftops of the charming old fish wholesalers opposite the flat. If you can't bear any hint of economic activity around you on your holidays Matosinhos may not be for you. It's a working harbour.

  • Great house but not location
    4 of 5

The house is absolutely lovely. It’s clean, comfortable, well equipped, fabulous air conditioning and the host is in regular contact to make sure all is well. However there are some significant downsides to this property that should be mentioned (I feel bad for the host because they are things are probably beyond their control but I wish we’d known & were in other reviews): - the host did not let us know how to get into the house until the day we were due to arrive. It’s always nice to know these details before you arrive to give peace of mind that you have rented from a reliable owner. - We had two homeless people sleeping directly outside the house all three nights we were there. There were people doing hard drugs on the road (not nice to walk your childen past) and there was a lot of shouting during the night.
