Make a holiday rental apartment or house in the Norwegian Fjords, Norway your home away from home

The Fjord regions of western Norway are stunning. Mountains surge vertically upwards from the glass-like stillness of the fjord waters. Consisting of stunning waterways, sheer mountain faces and amazingly white glaciers, Norwegian Fjord holidays are a magical experience, where sport is only a way to explore the most impressive natural wonders in Europe. The Norwegian Fjords have been named on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and not only for the staggering scenery; the traditional lifestyle of people living in this unforgiving terrain is still richly celebrated throughout the year with a range of festivals and events.

Things to do on holiday to the Norwegian Fjords

Sailing in the Norwegian Fjords is an unforgettable experience. Gliding silently through the still waters of the Norwegian Fjords with vast rock faces on either side, blocking out the sun is truly magical, and the silence is unforgettable. Kayaking and canoeing is also a fantastic way to explore the fjords from your moss-roofed cabin in the Norwegian Fjords, and if you are feeling adventurous, you can paddle up the fjord, pull your canoe to shore and walk from there, returning to your canoe to return home as the sun sets.

Walking, mountaineering and climbing are extremely popular on Norwegian Fjord holidays. The landscape, carved by the monumental power of moving glaciers, make sensational walking and climbing terrain, and the Norwegian Trekking Association have over 340 mountain huts scattered around the region if you cannot get back to your Norwegian Fjord accommodation before nightfall or are planning a multi-day hike. You can walk for days without ever coming across another soul, so if it is peace, tranquillity and mind-blowing scenery you are after; the Norwegian Fjords are waiting for your arrival. If you are hoping to take a walking holiday in the Norwegian Fjords, the best window is between June and September.

Glacier walking is an incredibly activity too. You really are spoilt for choice from a Norwegian Fjord property. The Jostedals Glacier is the largest in Northern Europe, and is particularly popular with ice-climbers and serious skiers. Walking and climbing on the glacier is extremely hard work, but clambering between ice crevasses is an awe-inspiring experience.

Skiing holidays in the Norwegian Fjords is not like skiing anywhere else in Europe. There are endless places perfect for skiing, with vast expanses of virgin snow, and vertical runs of almost 2km down to the waters of the Fjords. However, you will have to work for your sport, as there are no ski lifts here!

Places to visit on holiday to the Norwegian Fjords

Sogn og Fjordane is the largest Norwegian Fjord, located right in the heart of fjord country. The fjord is breath takingly beautiful, and no matter how long you stay in Norwegian Fjord accommodation in the area, you can never get blasé about the views. This is one of the few areas where glaciers meet fjords, meaning you can enjoy all that is best about Norwegian Fjord holidays from one location. The national parks are magnificent, and there are plenty of fascinating museums, heritage sites and galleries to view.

Hordaland is the gateway to the Norwegian Fjords, especially the charming city of Bergen with its wooden buildings and rich cultural traditions. Sailing in the Norwegian Fjords often starts from Hordaland, and there is plenty to entertain visitors on holiday in the Norwegian Fjords here.

In the very north of the Norwegian Fjords is More Og Romsdal, one of the most remote, natural and beautiful areas of the fjord lands. Rogaland the southernmost of the fjord counties, has ten cities, and is therefore one of the most populated areas. It is filled with tourist attractions and beaches and is a fantastic place to visit to wet your appetite for Norwegian Fjord holidays.

Travel to the Norwegian Fjords

The small airport of Haugesund (HAU) is a huge asset for anyone wanting to walk, ski or go sailing in the Norwegian Fjords. Ryanair provide direct flights fromLondonStansted (STN), but for a larger range of departure points in the UK, Copenhagen Airport (CPH) has plenty of services.

Outstanding location and property for a getaway holiday

5 of 5
My wife and I were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and we really could not have chosen a better place, 5 stars and so much more. Views of meadows and lakes and snow covered mountains from every room. The owner Lars-Engil lived next door and was very helpful; they built the house 2 years ago and it is stunning – spacious, great décor, very well equipped kitchen – a pleasure to cook in, spotless, even a hot tub, log fire and candles on the patio with mountain views, billiards and darts in the cellar. This house would feel spacious with 8 people no problem as the first floor has its own lounge and kitchen too – great for groups – we hope to take our extended family with us next time and stay the whole holiday here – it is such a good base for day tours around beautiful fjords, lakes and mountains – for example only 8 min drive north on E13 and we were high and driving thorough a winter wonderland at Harklau and beyond, two hours to the coast on the E609. Or walk from the house around the village valley with lakes, woods, and beautiful rapids river only two minutes from the house. So worth the 30 minute beautiful drive from Sande – nearest town and restaurant. Self-catering is easy with a well-equipped locally run store in the village. We have no hesitation recommending this property.....you will not be disappointed with any aspect of your stay and you will want to return.

A truly wonderful holiday

5 of 5
We had a superb stay at Ragnhild and Magne's beautiful home just outside Fusa. The house is exceptionally situated with stunning views out to sea and close to the small harbour below to easily get out and do a bit of fishing. Magne can rent you a boat too and went above and beyond to get it ready for us so we could spend some time on the sea. Inside, the house is just as lovely as the outside. Light, beautifully furnished (and with additional adjustments for disabled users) very comfortable beds, full kitchen and the best wood burning stove ever. We enjoyed nothing more than sitting by the stove and staring at the stunning views over the sea. Ragnhild and Magne are lovely and couldn't have been more helpful during our stay. I just wish we'd booked another week. We will definitely be back soon! Also don't forget to try some marvellous fresh milk from Magne's cows.
