I don't think I can say enough good things about our stay at the Riad Magie d'Orient. The riad is absolutely gorgeous and exactly as you see in the images and exactly what we were hoping for. I looked at several others but this seemed to have everything I was hoping for and I wasn't disappointed!
I went with my two sisters and two friends for a birthday trip so we were a group of middle aged women exploring Marrakech. It's so comfortable with plenty of room for our group of 5 to spread out but also feels homely enough at the same time. We loved our rooms and bathrooms and the courtyard was perfect. The traditional Moroccan decor and the orange-flower scented air throughout really makes it special place to stay.
Jacques and Mouhamed couldn't have been more helpful in organising everything before our stay. They responded quickly to my numerous emails and took care of everything I requested - we had several airport transfers, a guide for the souk, several dinners and a day trip to Essaouira all arranged by them. And while we were there the service was impeccable. Abdul and Mouhamed are absolute treasures, going out of their way to take care of us. Nothing was too much trouble for them. It really was something!
We had dinner at the riad three times and each time it was excellent. It was lovely to come back from a long, hot day of sightseeing or day tripping to relax on the rooftop terrace or take a dip in the pool and then have a delicious dinner. I highly recommend the tagines and the couscous.
The combination of the beautiful house, the excellent care from Jacques/Mouhamed before our trip and the wonderful care from Mouhamed and Abdul while we were there made this such a memorable trip for our group. We loved Marrakech but our stay at this riad was the icing on the cake. Thanks so much Jacques, Mouhamed and Abdul. We hope to come back one day.
We had a party of 10 adults staying at the villa. There was lots of space and at no time did we feel over crowded. The villa is beautiful with lovely furnishings and good taste throughout. We were there early September and the weather was perfect - not too hot but just right.
Having a hire car was essential as there are no shops close by and it meant we could go into Essaouira as and when we pleased. Shopping there is wonderful and the locals don't hassle you when you shop or look around. They are very friendly and compared with Marrakesh where we stayed later, very easy going.
We had Latifa cook for us each night and this meant we got a real taste of Moroccan food and could have our own wine with the meal.
Latifa is wonderful and very friendly and helpful but speaking good French is essential. We had a couple of communication hiccups at the start which meant we were very worried about the costings but it all worked out well.
There is everything you need to exist at the villa - it is very well equipped and comfortable. We didn't get the instructions in a readable format until we had been there a couple of days so were a little startled to open the window and find the gardener outside one morning but he did a wonderful job keeping the pool clean and the outside tidy.
We went riding on the beach which was amazing and there are other things to do locally if you wish. There are some wonderful bars and restaurants in Essaouira and taxis cost about 10 euros for a one way journey. Probably cheaper if you are local but you have to allow for the local 'tourist tax' which you can't resent as the local area is not well off.
It is probably a good idea to decide on what service you want from Latifa before you arrive and asking her to have a meal ready for your first night is a really good idea and then you can get her to take you shopping for food if you need to after that. She is lovely and can't do enough for guests but needs the reassurance on knowing what she is likely to earn whilst you are on your visit as she and her family rely on this income.
It should be noted that the villa has free range chickens in the garden, free range tortoises with their own little ramps! and two house cats - we had a member of our group who was allergic to cats and it would have been good to know they were in residence before we booked so they could have brought medication but with the open plan living it didn't prove to be a problem.
