Make a holiday rental beach riad or accommodation in Essaouira, Morocco your home away from home

The city of Essaouira, Morocco looks from every angle as if it has been lifted from a holiday guide. The Jewish, Berber, Carthaginian, Portuguese and British influences manage to combine beautifully to create a city of a thousand attractions. Located on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, Essaouira boasts a wonderful, sweeping beach, making it one of Morocco’s finest coastal resorts. Blissfully laid back and surprisingly cosmopolitan, Essaouira is a perfect retreat, especially for windsurfers and surfers, but also for those wishing to enjoy the wonders of Morocco at a relaxed pace.

Things to do in Essaouira, Morocco

Essaouira’s charm is engulfing, with white and blue riads interspersed with art galleries, traditional workshops and wonderful restaurants, all encased by the famous red sandstone walls that protect Essaouira. There are a vast range of sites to explore from Essaouira accommodation, from the magnificent ruins of the Sultan’s Palace to the famous Sand Castle which is claimed to have been an inspiration to Jimmy Hendrix. The Sidi Mohamed ben Abdallah Museum is a fantastic place to start your tour from Essaouira accommodation, as it tells the history of local traditions, art and music. The fish market, which sells the daily catch from Essaouira’s fishing fleet, is an absolute marvel, well worth investigating. Any good Essaouira guide will document the best sightseeing routes.

Taking an Essaouira beach riad is the perfect way to enjoy the best of the city. Essaouira beach is never crowded, stretching for as far as the eye can see around a sweeping bay. The golden sands of Essaouira beaches, from Plage de Safi in the north to the beach around the inspirational Bordj El Berod to the south, are perfect for lazy days in the sun, although when the seas are rough, swimming in Essaouira can be dangerous. Known as the ‘windy city’, windsurfing in Essaouira is fantastic. There are some excellent Essaouira windsurfing and surfing spots, especially to the north near Moulay, which, despite having poor access, has excellent conditions for both surfing and windsurfing, although it is not for the feint hearted!

Amazing house- private and tranquil oasis

5 of 5
My partner and I visited Villa Dar Do the other week after a week of driving around Morocco taking in the various and amazing sights and endless landscapes. After continuous days of driving and adventure, Villa Dar Do was a much welcomed oasis of peace and rest. As there were only 2 of us, the space was more than adequate, but this would be perfect for a large group or family, and there are lots of various outdoor terraces and courtyards where you can get your privacy even with large numbers. I think this is the most beautifully decorated home we have visited on holiday (we have used Home Away/Owners Direct lots of times before), and it's clear this is a home rather than a holiday place. You might not spend much time indoors in Morocco, but so much care and love has been taken in the house, both inside and out, and it really was a lovely place to stay- a real home. The house is very well equipped, clean and comfortable- w/ modern TV with HDMI (a bonus for movie night), perculator and juicer aswell (Tip: oranges are cheap and grow in abundance, so take advantage of making your own fresh orange juice!) We spent most of our time in the garden, which is so well kept, and to my delight, resident tortoises! Said, the housekeeper, took such good care of use while we were there, showing us where the house is (down an easily accessible track, but easy to find), and also inviting us to see various local souks and checking everything was ok throughout our stay. If we needed anything it was good to know he was there. It was quite difficult to communicate for us, mainly because our French is terrible (sorry!) so some basic phrases would be useful for you throughout your trip to Morocco. We loved the house so much, we spent most of our time there by the pool, with the tortoises, eating our BBQs, but we made a day trip to Essaouira (10 mins drive away and great if you Kite Surf)- also lovely, and less intense than Marrakech. Would have like to spent a little longer there, as it was great for shopping. There is also, if needed, a Carrefour there, so you can buy your wine, beer and home comforts. The only tiny tiny negative thing I would say, and very very minor, is that the meeting point is quite vague for a tourist, and found a better meeting point at a petrol station (to be guided to the house)- big bold letters, much easier to see. Saying that, we never got lost and our stay was perfect! Thankyou so much for having us at your beautiful home! Jodie & James
