Make a holiday rental beach riad or accommodation in Essaouira, Morocco your home away from home

The city of Essaouira, Morocco looks from every angle as if it has been lifted from a holiday guide. The Jewish, Berber, Carthaginian, Portuguese and British influences manage to combine beautifully to create a city of a thousand attractions. Located on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, Essaouira boasts a wonderful, sweeping beach, making it one of Morocco’s finest coastal resorts. Blissfully laid back and surprisingly cosmopolitan, Essaouira is a perfect retreat, especially for windsurfers and surfers, but also for those wishing to enjoy the wonders of Morocco at a relaxed pace.

Things to do in Essaouira, Morocco

Essaouira’s charm is engulfing, with white and blue riads interspersed with art galleries, traditional workshops and wonderful restaurants, all encased by the famous red sandstone walls that protect Essaouira. There are a vast range of sites to explore from Essaouira accommodation, from the magnificent ruins of the Sultan’s Palace to the famous Sand Castle which is claimed to have been an inspiration to Jimmy Hendrix. The Sidi Mohamed ben Abdallah Museum is a fantastic place to start your tour from Essaouira accommodation, as it tells the history of local traditions, art and music. The fish market, which sells the daily catch from Essaouira’s fishing fleet, is an absolute marvel, well worth investigating. Any good Essaouira guide will document the best sightseeing routes.

Taking an Essaouira beach riad is the perfect way to enjoy the best of the city. Essaouira beach is never crowded, stretching for as far as the eye can see around a sweeping bay. The golden sands of Essaouira beaches, from Plage de Safi in the north to the beach around the inspirational Bordj El Berod to the south, are perfect for lazy days in the sun, although when the seas are rough, swimming in Essaouira can be dangerous. Known as the ‘windy city’, windsurfing in Essaouira is fantastic. There are some excellent Essaouira windsurfing and surfing spots, especially to the north near Moulay, which, despite having poor access, has excellent conditions for both surfing and windsurfing, although it is not for the feint hearted!

A lovely holiday villa in Essaouria

                                                        4 of 5
The villa itself was lovely, if a bit hard to find as it's in a location a bit from the town of Ghaouza which is a ten minutes drive from Essaouira. We liked this though, having our own place slightly away from the main tourist things. You would be better off having a car to move about places however we managed fine without. A taxi is about 25 dirham from the main road in Ghaouza to Essaouira and the public bus is only 4 dirham. The house is beautiful, spacious and well maintained and has all the things you would want: wifi, tv, dvds. The pool was great with six sun loungers which we used a lot. We particularly enjoyed the Moroccan breakfast our housekeeper made every morning, Zara, which included freshly made orange juice, Moroccan pancakes and a type of Moroccan breakfast bread which reminded me of English muffins, omelettes, fresh fruit and coffee for only 3 euro per person. Xavier was also very accommodating and always replied to my emails very fast. Having said that i think he overcharged for a few things maybe like dinner at 10 euros per head which i think was expensive considering what it was and the relative price of ingredients in Morocco, and for the taxi to Marrakesh airport which was £95 for the two hour journey for 7 of us, which seems a bit expensive again considering the usual cost of taxis in Essaouira. All in al, we really enjoyed our stay at Xavier's villa near Essaouira and would definitely recommend it as a place to stay, especially if you are after a bit of peace and quiet away from the touristy spots, but keeping them within reach.

                                                        Even Better this Time

                                                        5 of 5
This was our second visit. We did not think it could be any better, but we stayed longer - 2 and a half weeks - so we found even more to enjoy. Fouad arranged the taxi from the air[port and was there late in the evening to make sure we settled in. Karima looked after us well. We had home-cooked meals which were tasty and at the just the time we ordered. The house feels like a second home ! We also found a few more local eateries and takeaways. As always, the local people were very friendly, and seemed pleased that we spent time with them. All in all, another great holiday. Liz and Pete

Stunning villa, better than the pictures!

                                                        5 of 5
I stayed here in a group of 8 and we had the most amazing holiday! The villa is stunning - even better and much bigger than it looks in the photos. The pool is lovely and it was very clean. Michel was a very nice host and provided excellent directions as we drove from Marrakech (bit hairy when leaving Marrakech but fine for most part) he also came to welcome us and answer any questions and was on hand for the week if we had any questions. The villa is situated down a track and you definitely need a car, it's not a problem because you can't drink much in town but the carrefour sells wine beer and spirits (cheaper to get spirits in duty free) There is lots of space to dine in the evening and lovely outdoor covered areas, also very comfortable sun loungers and spaces to rest. There is a cat, a couple of very friendly dogs (outside the gates) and loads of lovely tortoises roaming around! It is a bargain , it's very quiet and not overlooked, the house is secure and felt safe. You won't regret booking this villa!!!! thank you Michel for a wonderful holiday!
