Akumal is a beach resort on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. This stunning seaside town does not like to advertise itself too much as it has long been a secret getaway, where the stunning natural surroundings, diverse nature and magnificent beaches create a tropical haven where you can truly let it all go and relax. Akumal beach resort originated in the 1950’s as an exclusive resort for scuba divers, especially due to the turtle populations which favour the bays along the Yucatan Peninsula.

Things to do on holiday in Akumal, Mexico

Akumal holiday rentals are loved so much partially due to the fantastic white sand beaches that stretch out in front of them. Backed by palm trees and surrounded by breathtaking scenery, the beaches make the ideal place to lie back and relax, before taking a dip in the blissfully warm waters of the Caribbean. The coral reefs of the three bays upon which the Akumal beach resort lays, Half Moon Bay, Aventuras Akumal Bay and Greater Akumal Bay, are perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving at anytime of year.

The further you travel along the coast, the more secluded the beaches become, although even during the height of the summer, there are never crowds anywhere in the town. There is an array of fine restaurants, shops, dive centres and fun beach bars in the town, so you shall want for nothing whilst staying in your luxury Akumal holiday rental villa.

The stunning countryside surrounding Akumal is the ideal location for bike rides and jungle walks, exploring the wonderful variety of plants and animals lucky enough to call this part of the world home. The Yucatan peninsula is adorned with many beautiful and mysterious Mayan Ruins. The best known in the area are the fascinating Chichen Itza, (it is advisable you take a guided tour to understand some of the incredible findings here), Coba and Tulum. However, as you walk or cycle through the jungle, or even half way through a round of golf, you will most likely stumble across something!

Places to holiday in Akumal, Mexico

There are some magnificent day trips available from the self catering Akumal holiday rentals. Visiting the cenotes (fresh water sinkholes) is a great way to spend an afternoon, perfect for swimming, diving and snorkelling.

Playa del Carmen is a bustling little town, day and night. There are many bars and restaurants to explore, and boat trips leave from the marina, going out to the party island of Cozumel.

Akumal is blessed with an almost constant climate. Annual average temperatures are over 25°C, with daily temperatures reaching 30°C on the vast majority of days.

Cancun Airport (CUN) is just over an hour away from the Akumal beach resort, Mexico. Flights to Cancun no longer come direct from the UK, but with a change in Miami Airport (MIA), you can still reach Cancun without too much hassle. Flights are remarkably cheap too, and for some of the best deals, try American Airlines.

                                                                                                      3 of us stayed at the apartment for 4 nights. We really enjoyed the light spatious interior, well-equipt kitchen, balcony with hammock and comfortable chairs. The master bedroom has a very comfortable bed with much needed air-con. It's convenient to have a bar/restaurant below even though the food is not that good for the price you pay for it. The bay is nice for snorkelling ( I saw a turtle, colourful fish and a lionfish)and swimming. The best reef to snorkel in is a bit far out close to where the big waves break. It's important to know that there seems to be a constant wind and there are waves so it's not always ideal for a relaxing easy swim. Also when the sea is a bit rough it can affect the snorkelling. We were there at the end of May and we don't know what the weather does the rest of the year. The beach is sandy but as you enter the water there are rocks (and maybe some small sea urchins) so you have to take care or wear swim shoes. In the apartment there is a chest containing snorkeling and swimming equipment as well as some water sports equipment. Although if you are a serious snorkeller bring your own as some of the equipment is a bit incomplete and uncomfortable. On the beach there are some loungers and umbrellas for your free use. The cleaning lady comes every day. They provide drinking water. The Akumal beach town is a collection of tourist shops and facilities. Akumal town is more authentic with cheaper shops and more locals but it's only worth to stop by for supplies. We recommend hiring a car to take full advantage of the area and to save money and time on taxi/bus rides. All in all we recommend this condo
