Rodrigues Island is a dependency of Mauritius and remains largely undeveloped. The island is just 12 miles long and has a sheltered lagoon with dozens of islets. Exploring the island gives a general impression of mountainous terrain, being of volcanic origin. The locals are very friendly and welcoming. English is spoken in the main shops and restaurants although Creole is the official language among the 34,000 population. The island is dependent upon fishing, animal rearing and tourism for income and the pace of life is reassuring slow.

"L'Escale was fantastic. The place was simple but clean and had everything one would wish for a self catering holiday. It has the best view of the island and a great place to watch the sun set.It is also very peaceful and all in all it is a place where my wife and I would like to go back over and over again. I must not forget Bernadette and Marie-Claire who worked very hard to make our stay there very pleasent and enjoyable. The food cooked by Bernadette was very good too."
