The Mediterranean island of Malta is a fantastic destination for holidaymakers and there are many wonderful towns and villages to stay at. One such place is the ancient city of Vittoriosa or Birgu as it also known, which sits on the east coast of the island. Vittoriosa has some fantastic places to explore including the harbour and is a great place for hiking and cycling. There is plenty on offer here for sports enthusiasts including an 18-hole golf course at the Royal Malta Golf Club in Marsa. This same club also offers miniature golf, swimming, tennis and squash. There are beaches on the east coast that are a short drive from Vittoriosa suitable for sunbathing, whilst swimming and snorkelling in the Mediterranean Sea is also very pleasant. Various watersports can be tried in Malta including sailing, water skiing, paragliding, wake boarding, jet biking, wind surfing and kayaking. Visitors will find a few places to dine in and around the town including restaurants, bars and cafes including the island’s first vegetarian eatery. There are a numerous shops in the area for self catering holidaymakers to purchase food and drink from as well as souvenirs.
This ancient city has many fascinating old buildings including palaces and churches. A highlight is the Church of San Lawrenz and the Inquisitor’s Palace. Other places of interest here are Fort St Angelo, Dockyard Creek and Post of Castille. A couple of museums are located here too including the Maritime Museum and Vittoriosa 1565 Museum.
The warmest time of the year to visit Malta is generally July and August when the average high is approximately 32 degrees centigrade. January and February are the coolest months with an average high of 16 degrees centigrade and average lows of 10C. There is very little rainfall in Malta especially in summer. The wettest months are generally November and December with an average of 111mm per month.
Malta International Airport (MLA) is the only airport in Malta and receives flights all year round from many cities. Air Malta fly to and from Amsterdam, Athens, Berlin, Birmingham, Brussels, Catania, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Geneva, Hamburg, Istanbul, London, Manchester, Milan, Moscow, Munich, Paris, Reggio Calabria, Rome, Sofia, Stuttgart, Tripoli, Vienna and Zürich. Vittoriosa is approximately a 15 minute drive from the airport and there are car rental services and taxis available on the island.
A trip to the Maltese capital city Valetta is well worthwhile as there are many historic buildings, palaces, churches, museums and galleries here. Visitors may also like to take a trip to the fishing village St Julian’s Bay on the main island, where there is lots of nightlife and entertainment. Victoria is the main town on the island of Gozo and offers many interesting places to visit as well as good shops and restaurants.
