Make a holiday rental apartment or villa in Volterra, Italy your home away from home

Volterra is a beautifully built walled town in the countryside of Tuscany, in the Pisa region. Known for the two beautiful medieval castles, Volterra is one of the finest medieval towns in Tuscany, yet is never at the mercy of tourist crowds as many Italian towns can become.

Things to do on holiday to Volterra, Italy

The rich historical heritage of Volterra is unsurpassed. The 10th century cathedral is wonderfully impressive, even by today’s standards, and has been enlarged many times over the centuries. However, it is the number and quality of Etruscan finds which really excite those with an interest in history, bringing visitors from around the world to Volterra accommodation to see for themselves. The Guarnacci Museum holds the best Etruscan artefact collection in the world, and is a ‘must-see’ attraction for anyone staying in self catering Volterra holiday rental accommodation. The Etruscan baths, aqueducts and amphitheatre still stand, and you will regularly pass through the beautiful Porto dell’Arco as you wander the streets of Volterra.

Pieces from the Renaissance era can be found in Volterra too. The Civic Art Gallery and Museum of Sacred Art are both well worth visiting from a holiday rental in Volterra, housing some of the most impressive works from the Sienese and Florentine Schools. After a day of artistic enlightenment, there are over 20 restaurants within the town to explore. Sipping local wines and delving into regional gastronomic specialities is an absolutely fantastic way to spend your evenings. Throughout the year are a whole host of cultural events, celebrating everything from classical music to art, folklore to gastronomy, with the annual Volterra Teatro festival being the jewel in the crown.

The countryside surrounding a Volterra holiday rental is filled with hidden treasures, from ancient monasteries to roman villas lying in ruins. Exploring the hills and plains on foot, horse back and by mountain bike is an absolute delight, with many miles of signed trails leading you through the finest parts of the countryside.

Places to visit on holiday to Volterra, Italy

The largest attraction in the area is the town of Pisa, which is within easy reach of a holiday rental in Volterra. Famous for its leaning tower, Pisa can get a little crowded during the summer months, but if you can retire to a Volterra villa rental after a long day of sightseeing in Pisa, the crowds are never a hassle. The shopping, restaurants and festivals of Pisa are a huge draw too, and in the surrounding area, there are both golf courses and magnificent hiking trails.

Weather in Volterra, Italy

Summers in Volterra are wonderfully hot, especially in July and August when monthly average temperatures exceed 27°C, with daily maximums often reaching up to 36°C. Spring and autumn are also hugely pleasant times to visit a Volterra holiday rental, as temperatures remain around 30°C during the day, but the sting has been taken out a little.

Travel to Volterra, Italy

Pisa International Airport (PSA) is just 65km from the heart of Volterra. Luckily for those of us visiting Volterra holiday rentals from the UK, there are a great range of flights to Pisa from airports both big and small throughout the UK.

This is the perfect base for a wonderful holiday

5 of 5
The property is set in a most idyllic and quiet area, perfect for a relaxing unwind for a couple, although there were three other properties on site, two of which could take family groups, it would never feel overcrowded. The grounds are very spacious there is always somewhere to explore. The self catering accommodation was presented in first class condition, clean, well equipped, comfy and welcoming. The swimming pool is large, clean and well kept, with shady cool places from which to overlook the amazing Tuscan countryside. Josh was the perfect host, very informative and helpful. Located just outside the village of Volterrra, it is within easy distance and ideal for easily visiting and discovering the many sights of Tuscany such as, Pisa, Florence Sienna, San Giammaniano as well as Voleterra itself which is amazing. We had such a wonderful time there and would not hesitate in the least to heartily recommend it to others. We will deifintely be back, and for longer next time

Lovely homely apartment with great views in the countryside

5 of 5
The apartment is on the ground floor, spacious and homely, with a table on the terrace and a path down to a shared infinity pool that you can swim in and has beached sides, with gardens around. All this in Tuscany woodland and beautiful surroundings. We enjoyed a very peaceful week resting and venturing out to nearby towns for supplies when they ran out. Also enjoyed a pleasant meal at Casa Masi largely because of the gardens and the steak florentine (just past Montaione).
