Make a holiday villa in Villanova Monteleone your home away from home

There are some locations in Sardinia where you can experience the best that the island has to offer: close to the beaches and historical sites, situated in quaint villages and surrounded by stunning countryside. A holiday villa in Villanova Monteleone places you in one such a location. As if its spectacular setting isn’t enough, this hilltop village is close to many of Sardinia’s attractions so that it’s the perfect base from which to explore the island. Holiday villas in Villanova Monteleone come in different sizes, from cosy little properties for couples to rambling houses for larger groups of friends. Most have BBQ facilities and all are tastefully furnished to ensure a comfortable stay.

Things to do

Villanova is a small village located on top of some ancient hills in north-western Sardinia, about 15 miles south-east of Alghero and 23 miles north of Bosa. When the Spanish captured Alghero in 1354, that coastal town’s inhabitants were banished to Villanova Monteleone. The area has been settled for much longer, though, as the many prehistoric sites in the area show.

-The historical architecture is beautiful. The Church of San Leonardo da Limoges is the main church in town and dates from the 16th century. Another highlight is Su Palaty ‘e sas Iscolas, which used to be an elementary school built in the 19th century and now houses a museum.

-The Sardinian Anglo-Arab Horse Fair is a must visit if you love horses so be sure to book your holiday apartment in Villanova Monteleone for the latter part of June. This fair is dedicated to the local horse breed that originated in Sardinia more than a century ago. The event features horsemanship competitions and of course the chestnut, bay or gray horses.

-The Archaeological Park of Nuraghe Appiu is located a couple of miles to the south-west of Villanova Monteleone. This is a fascinating site boasting a stone tower and the remains of a Nuragic settlement that dates from about three millennia ago. Another attraction in the park is an even older site: the necropolis of Puttu Codinu. These domus de janas or ‘giants’ tombs’ date from before the Nuragic civilization and have been carved into the limestone rockface to resemble something out of a fairytale.

-Monteleone Rocca Doria is a medieval village overlooking Temo Lake about 8 miles south-east of Villanove Monteleone. With its ancient churches and the remains of a fortress, this village is well worth a day trip from your holiday home in Villanova Monteleone. The shores of the lake and the valley are great for walking, horse-riding, bird-watching and cycling. You may even spot some wild horses here. There is also some good climbing to be had in the area. If you like getting free wine, be in this village on 17 January for the Feast of Sant’Antonio Abate.

-Alghero is another day trip you shouldn’t miss making. This picturesque medieval port is the place to go if you want to be spoilt for choice of restaurants and shops. The old part of town is a maze of cobbled alleys and along the waterfront you’ll find ancient sea walls and boardwalks to stroll along and enjoy the sunset. The area around Alghero boasts some of the best beaches in Sardinia, as well as a variety of water sports.

Weather in Villanova Monteleone

Villanova Monteleone has a Mediterranean climate. In summer it can become very hot, with temperatures reaching around 31 °C and you’ll want your Villanova Monteleone holiday accommodation to have air conditioning. Rain falls during the winter months, when temperatures drop to around 5 °C. The area can also become quite windy, especially when the north-easterly mistral blows in winter.

Getting to Villanova Monteleone

To get to your Villanova Monteleone holiday villa it’s easiest to fly to Alghero-Fertilia Airport, which receives flights from several European cities. The village lies just over 21 miles to the south-east of the airport. It’s easy to travel here on the Alghero–Bosa bus or you may want to rent a car at the airport and make the drive yourself.

Lovely apartment,central location

4 of 5
The apartment is beautiful, extremely clean and well furnished. It is very close to the main town, shops, bars and restaurants. The nearest beach is a few minutes walk but is small and the sea bed is rocky. The nicer sandy beaches are located further away, walkable (20 mins) or there is a beach bus that costs €5 return and picks up very close to the apartment. The housekeeper who met us on arrival was very friendly but couldn’t speak English and as we are unable to speak Italian we communicated mostly in sign language. It would be helpful if the apartment had a visitors guide book (as all other rentals) to explain in English & other key languages essential information, such as - emergency contacts, doctors, police, hospital, where the nearest supermarket is, which way to the beach, beach bus/ local bus stops, and how to use the household appliances etc. We had issues with our flights being cancelled by our airline - be warned that Ryanair are very unreliable and when they do fly they are delayed both ways affecting check in and check out times. Maria was very understanding with our difficulties. Overall we were delighted with the apartment, it was in the perfect location and met our needs, it was very quiet at night yet so close to the town.

A real gem

5 of 5
We (family of four) spent a lovely week in this comfortable, airy apartment, with a fantastic location in the heart of the historic centre of Alghero. Situated right on the walls of the old city, the apartment has a fantastic terrace overlooking the coast to the south of Alghero and views across to the north and west (including Capo Caccia) from the kitchen and living room windows. The old streets of the historic centre are a few metres walk from the apartment and at night the area around it is buzzing with life as people walk along the promenade and enjoy the pavement cafes nearby. The main bus terminal is a ten minute walk away so catching buses to the various beaches and places of interest is very straightforward. The main town beach is approximately 15-20 minutes from the flat on foot although there is a beach bar south of the property with a rocky bay from which to get in to the sea which is a 10-minute walk away. There are two double bedrooms which are both comfortably large. Bathroom is simple but clean and well laid out. Living room area is comfortable but might benefit from an additional sofa if all the guests want to be in there at one time. Kitchen is modern and has everything you'll need to self-cater. Overall the property has most of the facilities that you'd want, including air con throughout. Media addicts should note that there is no TV/DVD/CD player or radio in the apartment but the WIFI connection is good so if you're desperate to watch or listen to something you can use your IPad! Maria Luisa our host was very friendly and speaks excellent English. All in all it's a great base to stay in Alghero and I'd recommend it highly!
