Things to do

-Art and culture: Visitors can feast their eyes on hundreds of pieces of religious artwork inside the town’s churches. Among the most significant are the 18th-century frescoes of the Crocifissione – Crucifixion – and the Natività – Nativity – attributed to the painter Domenico La Bruna and found inside the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima della Misericordia.

-Theatre and music: During the summer, visitors with Valderice holiday apartments can take their seats at San Barnaba, an open-air theatre built in a disused quarry in pine wood. There’s a varied calendar of theatrical performances and film events. Music is also put under the spotlight during the summer months with a touring festival of jazz, opera and classical music called Ville Bagli & Musica.

-Food: Gastronomes are in for a treat. Valderice’s restaurant tables feature dishes made from ingredients grown locally including vegetables, cereals and olives. The typical dishes include pane cunzato (fresh bread from a wood oven that’s dressed with salt, oregano, oil, tomatoes, anchovies and tuma cheese).

-Events: Visitors can get down and party hard with the locals at festivals and carnivals held during the year. Residents are devoted to the Madonna della Misericordia (Our lady of Mercy) and every September carry an icon of her in a procession through the town. The first week of March is carnival time when the streets are alive with parades, games, clowns and masked revellers.

-Beaches: Valderice may well be perched on a hill but it has fabulous views of the sea, and the beaches are only a few minutes away by car. There are long stretches of sand as well as small, secluded bays that dot the coastline of the west coast of Sicily.

Lovely relaxing place with great views

5 of 5
We really enjoyed our stay. The property is so well equipped and it made it so easy to self cater with a few basics already there-salt, pepper, herbs, oil and a few other bits. Views are splendid and the garden was really pretty and well maintained. So many butterflies in the garden and lizards too, just great for wildlife. Lazing in the hammock under olive trees was divine. Bed was very comfortable and air-con meant temperature was fine too. We had a lovely welcome from our hosts when we arrived and the place was really clean and welcoming. You do need a car really as all the beaches and places of interest are a bit too far to walk but if you have transport it is ideal. The beaches in the area are fabulous and best snorkelling ever in the Nature Reserve which is a short drive away. Highly recommended.

Wish our stay could have been longer!

Villa Fontana was just what we wanted - quiet and relaxing in beautiful surroundings. Our hosts were welcoming and helpful and we loved every minute of our stay. Unfortunately, family circumstances meant we had to cut our stay short but we all agree that we will return to see more of the area and we will recommend Villa Fontana to all our friends.
