Make a holiday apartment on the Tuscan Islands your home away from home

The Tuscan archipelago is a cluster of seven islands just a short distance off Tuscany’s coast. Collectively, the islands of Elba, Giglio, Giannutri, Capraia, Pianosa, Montecristo and Gorgona are known as “Seven Sisters”, and visitors are attracted to their coastlines, countryside, wildlife, nature walks and historic towns. Elba is the largest of the islands and perhaps the most famous – Napoleon was exiled here. All are easy to reach from the mainland via regular ferry trips.

HomeAway has numerous holiday apartments on the Tuscan islands of Elba, Giannutri and Giglio that are available all year round. From seaside sanctuaries to rural retreats, all offer havens of peace and tranquillity. They come with a range of comforts such as TVs and DVD players to help make any stay comfortable. The holiday homes also offer great value for money, with prices starting at around £205 per week. Fully furnished and spacious Tuscan islands holiday villas are also available. For those looking for a great place beside the sea, nearby Livorno holiday rentals may appeal.

Things to do

-Wildlife: Together, the seven Tuscan islands form the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, a sanctuary for rare birds that travel between Europe and Africa. The peak time for migration is during the spring and among the species that are regularly seen are osprey, red-footed falcon, waders, herons and storks. The islands’ rocky coastlines are breeding grounds for many types of seabirds.

-Beaches: Holiday apartments in the Tuscan islands put the traveller in close proximity to many beaches and rocky coves. Elba has more than 70 beaches of extraordinary variety including golden sands, black sands, white shingle and pebbles. Many of the larger beaches have bathing establishments where sunbeds, umbrellas and watersports equipment can be hired. The islands of Capraia and Giglio are also popular for their beaches and snorkelling and diving opportunities.

-Historic monuments: There is a lot of history on the archipelago. The house in Portoferraio on Elba where Napoleon lived is now a museum that covers the time he spent there. Giglio houses the remains of an ancient Roman villa and in the town of Castello a striking medieval walled castle can be explored.

-Outdoor activities: Between them Elba, Giglio and Capraia have miles of walking trails that pass through unspoilt countryside with fabulous views of the sea and rugged treks across hilly terrain. Numerous ports offer boat trips for scuba diving and fishing as well as tours around the islands to appreciate their rocky perimeters from the sea.

Weather on the Tuscan Islands

The climate on the Tuscan islands is typically Mediterranean with hot, dry summers and cooler but mild winters. The average daily temperature peaks at around 28°C - 30°C in July and August, and January is the coldest month. The wettest weather is experienced during October and November.

Travel to the Tuscan Islands

Travellers with Tuscan islands holiday villas can get to their beautiful island bases by taking a ferry. There are several routes and ferry companies operate from a number of ports in Tuscany including Livorno, Piombino and Porto Santo Stefano. Elba also has its own airport that’s served by a handful of Italian and other European cities. Transport options on the islands include buses and hire cars.

dichtbij strand, ideaal huis voor grotere groep

5 of 5

Peace, privacy and total relaxation

5 of 5
My wife and I stayed for 9 days with our 15 month old Daughter and had an amazing time. Spent most of the time relaxing at the house, either in the air-con when too hot or ideally relaxing on the terrace with a blow up kids pool enjoying the sunshine. Filippo was a fantastic host, helping us get set up, gave us options for our stay in terms of where to go and what to explore and even advised on wines etc to try. We loved the house, the recent renovation made for a very comfortable stay. We used the outdoor shower multiple times per day and enjoyed the seclusion the home offers even though it's only a few mins to the beach below. Highly recommend the villa and the host.
