Make a holiday rental home or villa in Triora, Italy your home away from home

Triora is an ancient hill town that occupies the Argentine Valley area of Imperia, in the far west of Italy close to the French border. The town is perhaps best known for its witch trials during the Renaissance era, but learning about this gruesome history is not the only reason to visit Triora, as the town also has plenty of natural and historical attractions, as well as a good selection of holiday rental villas and apartments.

Things to do in Triora, Italy

Triora is a medieval town that has changed little over the centuries – something which is of benefit to its many visitors. The main attractions within the town centre include a number of churches, several good restaurants and traditional shops, and as you wander the narrow streets you will soon realise why Triora is regularly voted one of the most beautiful cities in Italy.

Triora also has something of an infamous history, as it was one of the centres for witch trials back in the 16th century. A museum in the town plays homage to this interesting period of time, and a number of exhibits give visitors the opportunity to learn about the powerful association which Triora has long has with witchcraft – which have seen it become the location for a number of witch-related re-enactments and festivals over the years.

With Triora virtually surrounded by mountains and rocky terrain, this destination is also something of a paradise for hikers, walkers and mountain climbers. There are a number of designated trails to be followed from the town centre outwards, with some fantastic views being the reward for reaching the summit.

Beautiful, medieval Pigna

5 of 5
Our family of four had a lovely week’s stay in Pigna. Our initial walk from where we left the car to unload round to the villa was breathtaking. Parts of the medieval village reminded me of Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley, with tiny alleys leading off and wooden doors with lamps hanging over. The villa had everything we needed and the outside space was perfect for relaxing or eating in the sun. The village of Pigna is quiet and friendly and where you feel part of the community. The local coffee shop sells amazing coffee, patisserie and ice cream, from where you can watch many cyclists come and go. The ‘local’ waterfalls we walked to provided many hours of exploration and relaxation alike. We visited the local bar and played pool and spent lovely evenings in other restaurants nearby. The beach at Bordighera is a stony beach where you can hire sun loungers, but we were comfortable enough to lay on towels and mingle in with the many locals who came down late afternoon. The sea varied from calm and tranquil to vast, smashing waves - both as equally enjoyed although the life guards were diligent in keeping people safe. Visits to other villages to see Monet’s bridge, waterfalls and amazing views kept us all amused. Thanks to the comprehensive information we received prior to going and in the villa this helped us to make the most out of our week, although also leaves us feeling that we need to go back for more!

Great location for a dose of Italian village life and to explore the Nervia valley

5 of 5
The house contains all you could need (be aware towels are not provided). The terrace is excellent for relaxing, catching some rays, and watching the changing colours of the mountains during the day and stars by night. The aerobatics of the small birds are an added delight. The village itself is beautiful, quiet and contained but with amenities and two excellent restaurants (we tried them both and our ideal would be a combination of elements from each). You can feel the tranquil pace of life for the inhabitants and go with the flow, while at least in summer when we were there we had concerts and a local food contest (Turtun) to enjoy in the square. Plus the location is an ideal base from which to explore the Nervia valley and other villages (Dolcheaqua, Apricale etc). Many thanks Jan and Trudy, more than happy to recommend a stay, hope to return ourselves one day. Nick (London) & Suzanne (Lyon)
