Make a self catering cottage or holiday rental in Trapani, Sicily your home away from home

The port town of Trapani is on the western coast of Sicily and is an ideal place to use as a self-catering holiday base for exploring this lovely island.   Renowned for its seafood, fresh tuna and local cuisine, the town remains largely unspoilt and undiscovered by tourists. The port dates back to Phoenician times when it was used to trade with Africa, Naples and the western Mediterranean. The old town has some interesting medieval buildings and a 17th century tower on the headland and there is a leafy park, where outdoor concerts and events often take place. The region was once mined for salt and there are still windmills along the coast.

Great fun and well up to expectations with only minor reservations.

Had no problem finding the boat - Emilio was there to welcome us. He is a really lovely guy - speaks very little English, though! (My wife speaks Italian) The boat is exactly as shown in the photos and was very clean throughout. We stayed as a couple and the state room was very comfortable - big bed - good firm mattress and two wash rooms - one with basin, toilet and bidet, the other with a basin and shower. The two other cabins each have a separate shower room. The kitchen equipment was a little sparse - we think that someone must have stolen the mugs and cereal bowls as Emilio looked surprised when we mentioned their absence. The gas hob is fine but the electric oven has never been used due to the fact that it is not connected to the shore power! Still - who wants to cook on holiday anyway? Fortunately the boat is moored bow on to the prevailing wind and there was plenty of that in the second week of March. We were very comfortable in the directors' chairs in the aft cockpit tucked out of the wind or in the saloon with the sliding doors open. It was too cool to use the fly-bridge or forward deck area. The only reservations we had were the fact that the forward hatch, over the bed was covered outside to reduce the light due to the inside blind being missing. This meant that the hatch could not be used in the event of an emergency escape. Also, there were no smoke, CO or gas alarms present anywhere on board. It is a great location 200 metres from the Hostaria San Pietro whose antipasto della casa is a must have - one between two - it's a proper traditional little restaurant. The centre of the old town is about 15 minutes walk with a great choice of eateries - don't miss Pizzeria Calvino - great pizzas and value - sensible beer prices and good local house rosso for nothing! We would love to go again a little later in the spring so that we could be outside all day as it is just great value and much more fun than a dingy apartment but would definitely take alarms with us.. Unfortunately due to the season no mention was made of island trips on either Emilio's sailing boat or the tender mentioned in the listing so we can't comment on that. Go on - we've all aspired to own a super yacht moored in a Mediterranean marina but unless you've got a million or two this is a great affordable option for a few nights. Many thanks to Emilio for all his help and hospitality and we hope to get out again for a few more nights with Angelica!

Lovely apartment. Short walk to old town. Make sure to check parking restrictions!

This apartment was superbly appointed with everything provided to make our stay comfortable including a nice bottle or wine and some sweet treats on arrival. We enjoyed our 2 nights here but did have problems with parking restrictions on the road outside and came out the first morning to find our car had disappeared! It had been towed away and we needed to pay 36 euros to get it back! The owners were very apologetic, but as we arrived on a Sunday evening and the parking restrictions related to Mondays it would be helpful to have been clearly shown where we could park free, and to have a notice about parking in the apartment to remind us. Also just a little concern about the bedside shelves which look very smart but have sharp edges and could do some damage getting up in the night a bit bleary eyed! Other than this we loved Trapani, exploring old town and taking the cable car to Erice. Thank you!
