Make a self catering cottage or holiday rental in Trapani, Sicily your home away from home

The port town of Trapani is on the western coast of Sicily and is an ideal place to use as a self-catering holiday base for exploring this lovely island.   Renowned for its seafood, fresh tuna and local cuisine, the town remains largely unspoilt and undiscovered by tourists. The port dates back to Phoenician times when it was used to trade with Africa, Naples and the western Mediterranean. The old town has some interesting medieval buildings and a 17th century tower on the headland and there is a leafy park, where outdoor concerts and events often take place. The region was once mined for salt and there are still windmills along the coast.

Lovely Location and Great Value

5 of 5
The house is situated in a vineyard with fig trees growing around the house. It is a 25 minute walk up the mountain road to the medieval village of Erice. Trapani is the main town and is about 15 minutes by car down the mountain. The mountain road (SP3) is steep with hairpin bends, so it is best to hire a small car like most of the locals. Anna-Maria who owns the property is delightful and very helpful although she does not speak English. If you rely on SatNav, please note that the SatNav will only direct you to the start of the SP3 road. We got caught out by this and got lost and had to phone Anna-Maria from a hotel. She was great and came and met us. However, once we knew where we were going, the house was easy to find. The house is a small stone built property with a terrace overlooking the vineyard and a hammock as well. The interior has a double bedroom and a sofa bed in the other room which doubles up as a kitchen and dining room. There is a small bathroom with a shower. The kitchen is fairly well stocked. The only thing that we found to be missing was a tin opener. The only criticism that I would make about the furnishing is that the mattress on the double bed is a bit like a camp bed and was not particularly comfortable. There was also a bit of a smell in the bathroom but i think that this is probably inevitable bearing in mind the location of the house. We found that there were some provisions in the fridge which was very helpful nd also some local produce for sale, including local wine which was delicious. As well as being close to Erice and Trapani, the house convenient for other places if you want a day out such as Palermo. We had a very relaxing stay and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I would certainly stay here again and would recommend it.

Lovely apartment and hosts but ...

4 of 5
This is a lovely, light and airy apartment just on the edge of the old town of Trapani. The owners Francesca and Guiseppe are delightful and do everything to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The apartment is spacious and very tastefully kitted out. There is also a huge, nicely furnished roof terrace which is a big plus to have outdoor space in the centre of the city. The only problem (apart from the shower not working very well) is that it very noisy. The traffic noise doesn't stop all night, it felt as we were in the middle of a race track. Trapani bars stay open until 3 am so if you are a late night reveller this would be a great place for you, but if you are used to earlier nights with a bit of peace and quiet, this would probably not be ideal. Trapani is a good base for visiting lots of other great places in NW Sicily. I wish we could say we loved this place because it has so much about it that is lovely, but we would have preferred somewhere quieter.
