Make a holiday villa in Sutri your home away from home

HomeAway has holiday homes and villas in Sutri to suit your taste, plans and budget. It’s a fabulous location, nestled in idyllic natural scenery and with all kinds of interesting things to see locally, including lakes, forests and a collection of ancient archaeological sites. Sutri villas are charming old buildings, lovingly restored and full of surprising original features. There’s plenty of rural seclusion here, and perhaps the best way to admire the scenery is from the comfort of a pool or spacious garden – luxuries that are offered by most Sutri holiday homes.

Things to do

-Local history. Sutri was once a vital strategic outpost of Rome, so you’ll find a few ancient ruins close by. There’s an amphitheatre here, unusual because it appears to have offered standing room only. Close to this structure is an even older Etruscan Necropolis, carved from the rock and accessed via a walking path. Also cut from the rock is the medieval church of the Madonna del Parto, with preserved frescoes.

-Cuisine. A classic rustic dish here acquacotta, a vegetable soup served with slices of local bread. Pasta is also a staple, and in this region it comes in the form of lombrichelli, straccia and gnocchi, with wild boar, hare or mushroom sauces. Lamb is another common ingredient and forms the basis of a typical stew, cooked with anchovies, herbs and wine.

-Nature. Not far to the south is Lake Bracciano. Because this lake is one of Rome’s main water reservoirs it’s been kept remarkably free of pollution – even motorboats are banned here. So it’s a great spot for swimming, canoeing and sailing in the summer. The immediate area is a hotspot for ecotourism - perfect for walking holidays, with rolling hills, woodland and historic buildings dotted around.

-Tarquinia. 50 kilometres west of Sutri is this coastal town, considered one of the best places in Italy to see Etruscan heritage. The Necropolises here are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and include more than 6,000 tombs, dating back as far as the 6th Century BC and decorated by intricate paintings. You can get an overview of this culture at the National Museum in Tarquinia.

-Rome. Italy’s capital is so close there’s no excuse not to drop in. It’s impossible to list the many historical wonders here, but one of the best is the Pantheon, which was built by Hadrian in the 2nd Century and remains intact and spectacular to this day. Also ancient and famous is the Coliseum, known for its gladiators, and the largest building of its kind on the former Roman world.

Weather in Sutri

Sutri is in an area with a mild Mediterranean climate. There’s warm weather for about four months of the year, with temperatures in mid-summer that occasionally exceed 30 degrees. Rainfall is rare in summer, but can occur a little more frequently in autumn and winter, when temperatures are mild. Winter days can be surprisingly chilly here, but most will get highs of about ten degrees and sub-zero conditions occurring only at night. Spring weather is moderate, with highs in the upper-teens in April and early-May.

Travel to Sutri

If you’re flying to your holiday home in Sutri then the airport to use is Rome Fiumicino (FCO), which is just over half an hour by car to the south of the town. It’s Italy’s busiest airport, and one of the most important in Europe, so there’s a wide array of airlines with connections to this destination from the UK. Once you’ve arrived you can take Rome’s A90 ring road and then SS2 to Sutri. It’s also possible to get the train from Rome to the town of Capranica, which is just a couple of kilometres from Sutri.

Lovely property with a great pool. Anna is so friendly and helpful.

We had a lovely week. The pool was great for fun and cooling off after a hot day exploring Rome or the surrounding area.

A beautiful setting, wonderful pool & grounds

4 of 5
The two properties are very rustic, identical in size, & both well equipped and scrupulously clean but really only suitable for families with older children. This is because both properties have an open winding staircase and the mezzanine which is where the single beds are situated. The stairs are quite rickety and the bannisters are insufficient to stop a small child falling through - this also applies to the balustrade around the mezzanine, we had a 2 year old with us and it was very fortunate there was enough of us to keep her safe. Upstairs the very low timbered ceilings are very attractive but really only suitable for people under 5’ 6”! The star of this listing is the beautiful pool and vast gardens with lovely views, it is exactly as shown in the photos, lots of sun beds, parasols and tables for alfresco eating. One small problem was a dog that fouled the gardens by the pool and the house but this was only once and was quickly cleared up when we pointed it out. After that we were concerned that the dog might be allowed to roam the gardens and meant we checked for any mess before letting the children play out, it didn’t happen again but it was a worry. The owner was a very friendly chap and very helpful with any problems or queries we had. Unfortunately the side of the baby’s cot collapsed one evening and he quickly came and tried to repair it. When we said we felt it was unsafe he agreed to replace it with the cot from the other property and helped to move it - luckily it didn’t happen in the middle of the night! The surrounding countryside is very beautiful and the lake is about a thirty minute drive. Lots of pretty restaurants and bars with beautiful lake views. It is necessary to have a car as there is nothing within walking distance but the village is a five minute drive and has a great supermarket and restaurants. In spite of the few problems we encountered with the properties we all enjoyed staying here as the swimming pool, the beautiful big gardens with the swings & slides etc were wonderful.
