Make a holiday rental apartment or villa in Spoleto, Italy your home away from home

The Spoleto region of Umbria in Italy is a peaceful and very attractive area, suitable for holidays all year round. The main town, Spoleto, is an ancient city with strong Roman influences set in the foothills of the Apennines. The region is a favourite destination for agro-tourism in Italy, with many visitors coming to enjoy the rural way of life first hand, which has gained notoriety as a magnificent way to relax and absorb the true culture of Umbria.

Things to do on holiday in Spoleto, Italy

The annual Spoleto Festival, the Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival of two worlds), in June and July transforms this peaceful region into a vibrant, exciting destination with performing arts and activities springing up on every corner of the Spoleto region. Getting a Spoleto holiday villa during the festival is a genuine coup as every room and apartment in Spoleto is taken from an early date.

Above Spoleto town, perched high on a hill is the Rocca, an impressive Papal fortress, adorned in beautiful frescos. The fortress was then turned into a prison, and touring the cells, it certainly makes you appreciate the fresh air and stunning scenery of the Spoleto scenery. The guided tours are well worth doing, as they not only inform you about the fortress, but provide interesting information which can aid your stay whichever Spoleto accommodation you choose.

There are a number of magnificent walks which can be enjoyed straight from your Spoleto villa, and aside the festival and architectural beauty, it has been walking holidays which have really put Spoleto on the tourist map. Circumnavigating the summit of Spoleto provides beautiful panoramic views of the countryside and takes you to some of the best sculptures in the town. The Ponte delle Torri is a large bridge over a shear wooded gorge which dominates the landscape on that side of the hill, and from the far end, there are a couple of long marked trails.

Both the Church of St Peter and the Church of St Eufemia will also leave an impression.

Wonderful setting, comfy and relaxing. A long walk from Town, closed aqueduct: drive a challenge!

4 of 5
Spoleto charming and full of interest. The steeple and tortuous access became a problem when the driver had an inner-ear problem: rescued by the wonderful Sophie and Franco, who provided taxi service and support with hospital visits. Cured within 48hrs (Hospital Staff were super): these were the days it rained. The views, the crepuscular visits by wild boar piglets after the fallen figs, the hot tub... each a delight. Such a shame the aqueduct remains closed, even to pedestrians, or it would have been an unqualified success. Being too mean to hire mr AVIS' satnav, got wonderfully lost between Spoleto and Orvieto: the scenery was magnificent. I will aim to get lost again the next time I visit! The unexpected gem was Bevagna, ancient, solid, largely unspoiled: well with a visit, if only to slow down even more.

Fabulous pool, lovely characterful home, stunning views - beautiful, historic Umbria - go for it!

5 of 5
We had a wonderful holiday with family in Poreta and relaxed instantly. September weather was great - hot days, cooler evenings, still warm enough for night-time dining outside. What we loved most: - Large, clean, single-depth pool (adult shoulder high) with awesome views across valley - Sunny terrace outside kitchen where we chilled, watched sunset and ate most of our meals - Lots of friendly local restaurants to suit every taste and budget. We ate well! - Fresh pasta shop in the village; buy to cook for yourself - Modern kitchen with good quality equipment and utensils - Brilliant village wine shop with interesting local wines - Walking - try the 11km route along Roman aqueduct from Spello to Collepino - Easy drive to medieval towns like Assisi, Gubbio (cable car is a must!) and Montefalco - Only 40 mins from Perugia airport so additional family could join us for the weekend - Black and green figs and yellow plums delicious in the garden - Good wi-fi connection - Last and certainly not least - the amazing Bianca who manages the house. We were slightly worried about privacy when we booked but everything turned out exactly as described. The big house was vacated, leaving us completely alone. Bianca met us in the village and showed us up to the house; she later quickly organised a small carpentry repair when needed (our fault); she never ever intruded. She and Sylvia (the owner) ensured our stay was completely relaxing and were very sensitive to our wish to be helped 'from a distance'. Thank you! Our only other comments would be: - There are a number of steep steps/drops inside and out so we wouldn't recommend for little ones or anyone unsteady on their feet - Four more kitchen mugs would be useful - A few more coat hangers helpful (fighting for these!) - An extra main door key would be handy for guests Thank you for a fabulous stay!
