Fascinating and beautiful place. Tucked away around a secluded switchback, ancient fruit and olive trees stud this amazing and spacious property. With spring stream flowing past house and down to historic onsite mill - there is something here for everyone - including pool with heated shower.
We enjoyed cooking and eating outside this summer for our part of 6 adults and 4 children. Our 2 week stay was over all too quickly.
With the wonderful Palazzolo Acreidi and it’s many small shops and restaurants and festivals only walking distance away, and a short drive to the ruins of Akrai, there was always something to do.
Day trips to Ortega, Agrigento, Taormina and the amazing Noto made our holiday unforgettable.
Thanks to the marvellous hospitality of our honey making hosts the Roggios, especially Mario who was gracious enough to lead the tour of the historic onsite Mill.
Highly recommended. 5 stars.
If you are looking for a slice of real Sicily, away from the touristy locations then look no further. The main attraction of this property is, as the description says, the outside space and beautiful swimming pool. The views take your breath away and we never tired of looking at them, either when we were relaxing by the pool, or enjoying the cool shade of the huge veranda. The villa itself I would describe as being of a reasonable standard - very clean but fairly basic compared to others we have stayed in (hence the 4 stars). The bed was very comfortable, the shower was adequate but it could do with a little bit of modernising in the kitchen. But what really what mattered to us was the outside space, as this is where are spending most of your time. This more than made up for any shortcomings internally, it really is such a beautiful spot and the owner clearly takes pride in maintaining the grounds. It's a little off the beaten track and you definitely need a car (as well as nerves of steel to drive around town centres - put it this way, they don't adhere to the highway code as we know it in the UK!! And would definitely recommend sat nav). It's up a very bumpy track so we were a bit concerned initially about the hire car but fortunately it came out unscathed! The nearest town/shops (Floridia) was about a 10 minute drive away. Not too much to do in Floridia itself (there was a fantastic bakery though - thoroughly recommended!! Dont miss the arancini and the bread is to die for) but not too much further away is Syracuse and Ortigia, which we visited most days. Here you will find all you could want in markets, cafes and restaurants serving amazing food and wine, gelato, pastry shops and little artisan shops to explore. And of course there are the many amazing archeological sites and the pretty harbour. There are apparently a number of sandy beaches within a short drive; we only managed one day at the beach at Avola and would recommend that for a safe place to swim with lovely warm water and plenty of amenities. Nearby Noto is a great place to explore too, with the most amazing architecture and history.
This was our first trip to Sicily. It took us a couple of days to settle in and 'get used' to the Sicilian way of life, but we soon fell under its charm and would recommend this villa to anyone looking for a real slice of Sicily, in a quite and tranquil location but with plenty to do nearby if you can tear yourself away from the pool!
