Make a holiday villa in Santuario di Valverde your home away from home
Finding the perfect holiday home can be a challenge if you and your travelling companions have different tastes. All have access to a garden and some also have their own swimming pool, making Santuario di Valverde the perfect option for groups of friends with children.
Things to do
Santuario di Valverde lies on the semi-rural outskirts of Alghero. It is named for an old sanctuary and church in the area and the main road that leads here, the Via Valverde.
- The Santuario di Valverde has been a pilgrimage site for many years. It’s not clear exactly when the church was built, but it dates back to at least the 17th century and was built on the ruins of an earlier church. There are stunning religious paintings in the building, but the attraction for pilgrims is the Madonna of Valverde, a clay statue of the Virgin Mary with the Baby Jesus. Pilgrimages usually take place between the first Sunday after Easter and the beginning of June. The site has a museum as well.
-The Via Valverde is gorgeous so even if you don’t want to go on a pilgrimage, it is great for walking and cycling. For about 4 miles from town to the Sanctuary, the road passes through lovely countryside with rolling hills and trees like almonds and olives that are hundreds of years old. Of course, a Santuario di Velverde holiday cottage will allow you to enjoy surroundings like these every day.
-Nearby Alghero is one of Sardinia’s most popular destinations and with good reason. Apart from admiring its museums and beautiful medieval architecture, you may want to stroll along the cobbled streets to explore the many little shops and restaurants. There are several markets but the main one is held on Wednesdays. Alghero is famous for its red coral and for the Sea Urchin Festival, which usually takes place in March or April.
-The beaches in the area around Alghero are some of Sardinia’s most beautiful. Here you can simply kick back and relax or you can practise a variety of water sports in the clear blue sea. There are some fantastic scuba-diving and snorkelling sites nearby and you can even explore underwater caves. If you prefer to stay dry but want an adrenaline rush, you’ll find some good rock-climbing spots in the cliffs above the water too.
-Neptune’s Grotto at Cappo Caccia is also within easy reach of Santuario di Valverde holiday homes. This popular attraction is only a little more than 10 miles away and can be reached either overland or by taking a boat trip from Alghero. Once you’ve entered the cave at sea level, you’ll be greeted by the sight of a stunning underwater lake with stalagmites reaching up towards the stalactite formations hanging down from the ceiling.
