Make a holiday villa in Santa Maria La Palma your home away from home

The sunny climate of Sardinia makes this island the perfect place to go to for a summer holiday. This part of Italy has everything, from glorious beaches to rugged inland countryside. If you’re looking for a rural getaway, look no further than a holiday villa in Santa Maria La Palma. This village in the north-eastern part of the island is surrounded by farming country where you can breathe in the fresh air and simply relax. However, it’s close enough to some of Sardinia’s most beautiful beaches and towns that you won’t ever have to feel bored or isolated. Most holiday villas in Santa Maria La Palma come with BBQ facilities and, in some cases, luxuries like a swimming pool and most are suitable for large groups, making them perfect for the kind of Italian-style family gathering where everyone gets together for a long lunch in the sun.

Things to do

Santa Maria La Palma is a small village about 7 miles to the north of the busy town of Alghero. Fertile plains dotted with green hills make for a stunning environment in which to live the good life.

-The countryside surrounding your Santa Maria La Palma holiday home simply begs to be explored. There are many paths suitable for cycling, hiking and horse-riding. This agricultural region focuses on some of the staples of Italian cuisine: There are vineyards as well as ancient olive groves and fig orchards.

-Alghero is well worth the short trip. Alghero is a beautiful medieval seaside town with several museums and historic sites. Don’t miss a stroll along the sea front with its centuries-old walls and boardwalks. The Wednesday market offers delicious local produce but you’ll also find plenty of great shopping in the town’s many little boutiques and shops.

-Beautiful beaches are within close proximity to holiday bungalows in Santa Maria La Palma. Here you can sunbathe, build sandcastles, swim or participate in a variety of water sports, from snorkelling and scuba diving to windsurfing.

-The nuraghi of Saint Imbenia and Palmavera, both only a couple of miles to the south-west in the Porto Conte area are must visits if you have an interest in history and archaeology. Nuraghi are stone towers built by the Nuragic people who lived in Sardinia about 3,000 years ago and are unique to the island. While the Nuraghe Palmavera is the more impressive of the two sites, Saint Imbenia also boasts the remains of a Phoenician necropolis and a Roman villa, bearing testament to some of the cultures that used to live in Sardinia in the past.

- Neptune’s Grotto is a must-see place in this part of Sardinia. Located at Cappo Caccia to the south-west of Santa Maria La Palma, it’s an easy drive or cycle away but if you want a special treat, take a boat from Alghero. You have to go down to sea level to reach the cave’s entrance and the kids might think they’re in a scene from a film about pirates. Inside, the stalagmite and stalactite formations are reflected in the still waters of an underground lake.

Weather in Santa Maria La Palma

Santa Maria La Palma has a sunny Mediterranean climate. Summer days are long, hot and dry, perfect for an outdoor lifestyle. However, temperatures can reach a maximum average of 31 °C and you may want to opt for a Santa Maria La Palma holiday villa with a swimming pool. Winters are rainy, especially in November and December, and cool. Like in most of Sardinia, it can be windy.

Getting to Santa Maria La Palma

Alghero-Fertilia Airport is less than 3 miles to the south of Santa Maria La Palma and receives flights from several airports in Europe. While the village is on the bus route between Alghero and Sassari, it may be best to rent a car at the airport since your Santa Maria La Palma holiday accommodation may be a little off the beaten track.

Lovely self-contained small villa in beautiful location

5 of 5
My husband and I stayed for a week for our silver wedding anniversary and we had a wonderful time. The villa was comfortable and had a beautiful view over the garden and open countryside to the sea, it also felt private because of its separate location and parking. The weather was a bit changeable when we stayed, but we spent every night on the veranda watching the sunset/ clouds/ stars or moon and listening to gentle clonking of sheep and cow bells (not loud enough to hear indoors and together sounding a bit like a wind-chime). We snorkelled from 7 or 8 different beaches and watched spectacular waves crash in on the days when the weather prevented this. We visited ancient ruins, attractive towns (Alghero is not too far away) and spectacular caves. We could have eaten out more than we did...but we wanted to be back on the balcony by sunset, so we settled for barbecued fish, pasta, salad, bread, cheeses and wine 'at home'. Wherever we went the people were really welcoming and tolerant of our minimal Italian. It was a fantastic holiday and we'd go back tomorrow if we didn't have to work!
